Masayuki Ishikawa draws illustrations on stores' aisle markers, display cases, walls

Japanese publisher Kodansha began streaming two videos on Monday featuring Moyashimon manga creator Masayuki Ishikawa creating sketches for five bookstores in Osaka to commemorate the release of the manga's 12th volume. Ishikawa had visited all five bookstores on April 5, the day Kodansha released the volume in Japan.

In the videos, Ishikawa provides illustrations and autographs on paper for the stores, but he also draws on various parts of the stores themselves, such as a cork message board, a white board, aisle markers, display cases, and on the walls.

The Moyashimon story follows a college student who discovers that he can see and communicate with the germs all around him — germs that appear as super-deformed characters. The manga has been running in Kodansha's Evening magazine since 2004. Del Rey licensed the manga and released two volumes before Kodansha Comics USA took over Del Rey's titles in 2010. The manga inspired two television anime series in 2007 and 2012, and a live-action drama adaptation aired in 2010. Crunchyroll is streaming both anime seasons outside of Japan, and Funimation has licensed the live-action series.
