posted on by Crystalyn Hodgkins
Gag anime spinoff of Fist of the North Star premiered in Japan on April 2

Media distribution service Crunchyroll announced on Tuesday that it will stream the latest anime adaptation of Kajio's DD Fist of the North Star (DD Hokuto no Ken) manga starting today at 8:00 p.m. EDT. The series will be available to premium users in North and South America, Africa, the Middle East, Australia, and New Zealand. The series will also be available to free users in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Poland, Sweden, and South Africa. Crunchyroll will stream the first two episodes of the series this week, and will then upload three episodes each following week on Tuesdays at 3:00 p.m. EDT.

Tetsuo Hara, the artist from the original Fist of the North Star manga series, is participating in the anime as an animation supervisor. Hara stated that, while he was publishing Fist of the North Star, he wanted to draw a gag manga. Fruits Basket's Akitarō Daichi, who previously directed slapstick comedies such as Prince Mackaroo and Gag Manga Biyori, is helming the series.

The DD Fist of the North Star manga is set "in the year 199x, mankind was … not engulfed in the flames of nuclear war?

"In the 21st century, the characters of Fist of the North Star are living in peaceful Japan. In particular, Kenshirō is a convenience store worker, Raoh works at a factory, and wracked by illness, Toki is looking for work. The legend of the Fighting NEET (Not in Education, Employment, or Training) North Star begins in the modern day."

The anime debuted in Japan on April 2 on TV Tokyo as part of a celebration of the 30th anniversary of the original Fist of the North Star manga series.
