3rd Madoka Magica Film's Footage Premieres on Japanese TV

Morning show gets exclusive tour of SHAFT studio, shows never-before-seen art

Fuji TV 's morning program Mezamashi Terebi aired a special feature on Gekijō-ban Mahō Shōjo Madoka Magica [Shinpen]: Hangyaku no Monogatari (Puella Magi Madoka Magica New Feature: Rebellion) on Friday. The program premiered new footage from the upcoming third Madoka Magica film:

The feature begins by noting that the original television anime series took the top three spots in the all-time Blu-ray sales charts for television anime, while the first two films have earned a combined total of over 1.1 billion yen (US$11 million) since they opened last October. The third film will be an entirely new story with brand-new animation.

Mezamashi Terebi showed its exclusive tour of SHAFT, the studio for both the television series and the films. (The program even noted that the studio is famous for its signature shots of head tilts.) The program host hefted the massive stacks of storyboards for the upcoming film, while SHAFT Representative Director Mitsutoshi Kubota noted that the third film will continue the story from the first two. While Homura, Mami, and Kyoko will return for the third film, Kubota also teased the possibility of new magical girls when asked by the host.

SHAFT led Mezamashi Terebi around the production room, where the animators unveiled the new character designs for Homura. The host tried to ask about the scene for which animator Rina Takenawa was drawing a key animation sketch of Homura, but Takenawa said she could not talk about it and asked fans to wait until opening day.

In the computer painting room, Mezamashi Terebi unveiled a character design for Kyubey, and color designer Izumi Takizawa noted that the ears have been slightly updated.

Mezamashi Terebi unveiled more key animation sketches for Homura, and then SHAFT allowed the program to premiere footage from the film itself.

The footage says:

"No one understands this sadness I feel."

A solitary girl has arrived.

A beacon of light towards hope

The new "rules"

They will overturn everything

The Shape of Love

"Who are you?"

I want to meet you, just one more time.

The film will open in Japan on October 26. A teaser trailer for the film will debut in theaters on Saturday, along with the first batch of advance tickets, posters, and flyers.
