Cameron: Will Start Developing Battle Angel Alita in 2017

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

Director James Cameron said in an interview with Gravity director Alfonso Cuarón that he plans to start developing the live-action adaptation of Yukito Kishiro's Battle Angel Alita (GUNNM) manga in 2017. Cameron spoke at the technology forum TagDF in Mexico City.

Cameron previously stated the film would not start until after Avatar 2 and 3. Avatar 2 will begin shooting early next year and will open no earlier than 2015, according to Avatar actress Zoe Saldana. Cameron also plans to direct The Informationist film based on a book by Taylor Stevens after he finishes directing the two sequels to his Avatar film.

According to an interview in 2011, Cameron said he was planning to adapt "the spine story" of the Battle Angel Alita manga with elements from the first four books. Cameron has been working on an adaptation of the manga since at least 2003, and he already commissioned a script and a year of design work.

Kishiro's manga ran in Shueisha's Business Jump magazine from 1990 to 1995, followed by the 1995-1996 follow-up Ashen Victor and the single-volume GUNNM: Other Stories. The story continued in 2001 with the partial retelling Battle Angel Alita: Last Order, which moved to Kodansha's Evening magazine as the result of an issue between Kishiro and Shueisha's Ultra Jump magazine.
