Kitaro's Shigeru Mizuki Launches Autobiographical Essay Manga

This year's 24th issue of Shogakukan's Big Comic magazine announced on Tuesday that Kitaro manga creator Shigeru Mizuki will launch a new manga series at 91 years old. The Watashi no Hibi (My Everyday) series will debut in the first 2014 Big Comic issue on December 25.

The visual essay manga will be based on Mizuki's own life. In the series, Mizuki will tell of his peaceful childhood, his experience in World War II, his poor life afterward, and his foray into kamishibai picture stories. Mainichi Shimbun's Mantan Web is hosting a few preview images of the new manga.

Mizuki will also publish a new chapter in his long-running manga series Ge Ge Ge no Kitaro in the February issue of Kodansha's Monthly Shōnen Rival magazine on December 28. The chapter is titled "Ge Ge Ge no Kitaro: Nezumi-Neko no Maki."

Mizuki began the Ge Ge Ge no Kitaro manga in 1959 under the name Hakaba Kitarō. The manga has spawned seven television series (including one Hakaba Kitarō anime), several animated movies, and two live-action films. North American publisher Drawn & Quarterly released a one-volume selection of the series under the title Kitaro in August. The company has also published Mizuki's NonNonBâ and Onward Towards Our Noble Deaths manga, and it is currently publishing his Showa: A History of Showa Japan (Comic Showa-Shi) manga.
