Contest to Design Cover for New Akira Book

posted on by Andrew Osmond
Entrants must create 'striking and original artwork' for new BFI book on Katsuhiro Ōtomo classic.

The British Film Institute has launched a competition to create the cover artwork for its forthcoming 'BFI Film Classic' book on Katsuhiro Ōtomo's Akira, to be published by Palgrave Macmillan. Entrants will need to 'Interpret the themes, characters, locations or motifs of the film to create a striking and original artwork.' They can use any media to create the artwork, which can be in one, two or full colour. More details, the entry form and the terms and conditions can all be found here.

The closing date for entries is March 14 2014. The winning artwork will feature on the cover of the special edition of the book. The winners will receive nine newly-published "BFI Film Classics' books (including Akira), as well as the BFI book Anime: A History by Jonathan Clements.

The Akira book will be published in October 2014. Like the other eight new books, it will coincide with a 'major BFI Science Fiction season.' It is written by Michelle Le Blanc and Colin Odell, whose previous books include Anime and Studio Ghibli, both published by Kamera Books. Le Blanc and Odell have also written books on such live-action subjects as John Carpenter, Jackie Chan and David Lynch.

The 'BFI Film Classics' is a long-running series of books, usually only around 100 pages long, each of which looks at a landmark cinema film.
