Japanese Bill Would Let Publishers Act on Behalf of Copyright Holders

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

Unauthorized scanning, translating, and distribution of manga has spurred lawmakers in Japan to submit a bill to revise the current Copyright Law. The bill in the current Diet session would allow publishers to file injunctions against unauthorized online distributors of manga, on behalf of the properties' copyright holders.

The leaks currently violate Japanese Copyright Law regardless of release date and can cost a defendant 10 years in prison. The Yomiuri Shimbun found three sites publishing One Piece and Naruto chapters prior to the release in Japan.
