Animax Asia describes the story as follows:

Based on Hitoshi Iwaaki's award-winning manga, Parasyte -the maxim- will infuse the late 1980s–1990s classic with a modern edge by setting the stage for the parasite epidemic in present day Japan.

The story unfolds when Shinichi Izumi (voiced by Nobunaga Shumazaki, Photo Kano), an ordinary high school student, is attacked by an alien parasite. He narrowly escapes from being fully infected by a parasite known as ‘Migi’ (Japanese for ‘Right’), who only manage to assume control of Shinichi's right arm. This marks the beginning of their extraordinary friendship, as both Shinichi and Migi will learn to co-exist with each other.

The plot thickens when they encounter other man-killing parasites and find themselves caught in the battle of the two species. With them being neither fully human nor alien, which side of the battle will they choose to take?

Kenichi Shimizu will direct the 24-episode series at Studio Madhouse with Shoji Yonemura (Guin Saga, Glass Fleet) in charge of series composition. Tadashi Hiramatsu (Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi, Kare Kano) is designing the characters and Ken Arai is composing the music. Fear, and Loathing in Las Vegas is performing the opening theme song "Let Me Hear."

The series will premiere in Japan on October 8.

Iwaaki serialized the manga in Kodansha's Afternoon magazine from 1990-1995. Mixxine, the company that eventually became Tokyopop, published Parasyte in its Mixxine magazine and later in compiled book volumes. Del Rey then republished the series from 2007-2009, and Kodansha Comics republished the manga again from 2011-2012.

The manga will also get two live-action film adaptations, the first of which is slated for December.
