Haikyu!! Manga, Novel Both Top Oricon's Weekly Charts

4th franchise to accomplish feat after Gintama, Blue Exorcist, Bleach

Japanese entertainment news and ranking website Oricon revealed on Thursday that the 13th volume of Haruichi Furudate's Haikyu!! manga (pictured at right) and the fourth volume of Furudate and writer Kiyoko Hoshi's novel version Haikyu!! Shosetsuban IV (pictured below left) both ranked at #1 in their categories for the week of September 29-October 5.

The 13th volume of Furudate's original manga shipped on October 3 and sold 347,210 copies in three days, ranking at #1 on the weekly comic rankings. The fourth volume of the novel version shipped on October 3 and sold 69,837 copies in three days to rank at #1 in the book category.

The feat marks the first time in two years and four months that an original manga and a novel adaptation have both ranked at #1 in the comic and book categories simultaneously.

Since Oricon began its comic rankings in April 2008, only three other franchises have accomplished the same feat: Gintama volume 39 and the Gintama Kaettekita 3-Nen Z-Gumi Ginpachi-Sensei Returns Keiketsu Shinsuke Takasugi-kun novel did it in April 2011, Blue Exorcist volume seven and the Ao no Exorcist Weekend Hero novel did it in September 2011, and Bleach volume 55 and the Bleach 1 Spirits Are Forever With You novel did it in June 2012.

Furudate's original manga also inspired a television anime series this year. Crunchyroll streamed the series as it aired and Sentai Filmworks licensed the series for home video.
