Ghibli's When Marnie Was There Film's English-Subtitled Teaser Posted

Australian distributor Madman Entertainment's official YouTube channel uploaded a teaser trailer for Studio Ghibli's When Marnie Was There film on Thursday. The teaser revealed that When Marnie Was There will get a limited two-week release in Australian cinemas starting on May 14. Madman will screen the film both with English subtitles and with the English dub track.

The film will open in U.S. theaters on May 22. The initial release will be limited to New York and Los Angeles, but GKIDS will expand the screening in the following weeks.

Twelve-year-old Anna believes she sits outside the invisible magic circle to which most people belong, and shuts herself off from everyone around her.Concerned for her health, Anna's foster mother decides to send her to rural Hokkaido to stay in a sleepy town by the sea. As she dreams her days away amongst the marshes, Anna finds herself strangely drawn to the enigmatic house which sits upon the edge there. This is where she meets Marnie, an energetic young girl who seems to appear from nowhere. The pair quickly become inseparable.One evening, Marnie makes a heartfelt request of Anna: "Promise me something - that we'll remain a secret, forever." Anna begins to wonder about her newfound friend and is compelled to investigate the truth about her. As she is drawn deeper into Marnie's world, she begins to learn about family, friendship and kindness.

When Marnie Was There adapts Joan G. Robinson's classic English children's novel of the same name. In his second film, director Hiromasa Yonebayashi (2010's The Secret World of Arrietty) has shifted the setting from the novel's Great Britain to a Japanese village on the shores of Hokkaido. Yonebayashi wrote the screenplay with Keiko Niwa (The Secret World of Arrietty) and Masashi Ando (A Letter to Momo, Spirited Away, Paprika). Ando also handled the character designs and animation direction. Takatsugu Muramatsu composed the film's soundtrack.

The film first premiered in North America at The New York International Children's Film Festival (NYICFF) in February.

The film opened in Japan last July.
