The story and setting of the new film will be completely separate from the one that premiered earlier this year, and is labeled as a "New Chapter." In order to get closer to the original ideas and story of the source material, the director, scenario writer, and cast are being replaced.

Hideaki Maekawa (Ultraman Saga VFX supervisor) is directing the film off of Ami Inagawa's scripts. CG studio Digital Frontier (Gantz Perfect Answer, Biohazard Damnation) is handling the visual effects for the film. The fim will star Taishi Nakagawa (live-action GTO 2012, Jigoku Sensei Nube), Yūna Tairi (Sadako 3D), Shōta Matsushima (live-action Hana-Kimi 2011), Ikumi Hisamatsu (live-action GTO 2014), Reo Kanshuji, and Soran Tamoto.

The previous film starred AKB48 member Anna Iriyama as the main heroine.

The first Ao Oni film premiered in Japanese theaters in July 2014, and grossed more than 200 million yen (about US$16.604 million) during its run in 80 theaters. The film also had a screening at the same time on Niconico, and with more than 10,000 paying viewers, it broke the website's record for the number of viewers on a paid program.

Ao Oni is a horror game that makes the player solve various puzzles and riddles in order to escape a demon in a locked or enclosed space. Videos of the game on YouTube and Nico Nico have passed 50 million views. The game is available to play in both Japanese and English. Publisher PHP Institute released a novel inspired by the game in Japan in February 2013 (cover seen left).
