New Power Rangers Film Delayed to January 13, 2017

Dean Israelite to direct live-action film

The official Power Rangers Twitter account announced on Thursday the new Power Rangers live-action film will be delayed to January 13, 2017. Film studio Lionsgate announced last August that it planned to release the movie in theaters on July 22, 2016.

The tweet also confirmed that director Dean Israelite (Project Almanac) will helm the film.

Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz are penning the Power Rangers script. The two writers previously wrote the X-Men: First Class and Thor films. Saban Brands' Brian Casentini and Lionsgate's Allison Shearmur will produce the film.

Actor and MMA fighter Jason David Frank, who starred in the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers television series as Tommy Oliver, said he plans to appear in the film in "cameos at least."

The Power Rangers franchise previously inspired two live-action films from 20th Century Fox: Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie opened in theaters in 1995 and Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie opened in theaters in 1997.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and the subsequent Power Rangers series use recut footage from the Japanese Super Sentai franchise. Mighty Morphin Power Rangers primarily used footage from Kyōryū Sentai Zyuranger, and the currently running series, Power Rangers Dino Charge, uses footage from Jūden Sentai Kyōryūger.
