Morikawa plays Yūichirō Iida, a stall vendor boy

The official website of the Makuranodanshi (Makura no Danshi or Pillow Boys) television anime announced on Wednesday that the anime has cast Toshiyuki Morikawa to play Yūichirō Iida, the stall vendor boy. In addition, the website revealed a visual for the character.

The visual describes the character:

An old stall vendor who loves [the Japanese dish] oden and freedom. He comforts customers with delicious oden and his gentle smile. He loves beer.

Interests: Drinking alcohol in the middle of the day on weekdays.

The anime promises a "new and novel 'sleeping side-by-side' experience entirely in the first-person perspective" to "heal tired hearts." It features 12 "Makura no Danshi" (pillow boys), all full of distinctly individual personalities and each catering to viewers who like a certain "type." The boys all live in the same town underneath a starry sky. Each of the "Makura no Danshi" will star his own weekly episode as they "sleep beside you and whisper."

Comic Earth Star began streaming the anime's first episode on July 15. Crunchyroll also began streaming the anime on July 15, and is streaming the series as it airs in Japan. Crunchyroll describes the series:

The anime's other characters include:

Yūichirō Umehara as Ryūshi Theodore Emori, the astronomy boy

Nobunaga Shimazaki as Nao Sasayama, the ria-jū [living the real life] boy

Sora Takahata as Eiji Kijinami, the dialect boy

Daisuke Kishio as Yonaga Chigiri, the flower arrangement boy

Shinnosuke Tachibana as Yayoi Chigiri, the flower arrangement boy

Kōsuke Toriumi as Shirusu Mochizuki, the librarian boy

Daisuke Namikawa as Sōsuke Tanaka, the sempai boy

Natsuki Hanae as Merry, the pillow boy

Yoshimasa Hosoya as Kanade Hanamine, the music boy

Yoshitsugu Matsuoka as Yū Maiki, the chūni [adolescent delusion] boy

Ayumu Murase as Hareto Enokawa, the cherub boy

Yuniko Ayana (Kinmoza! Kiniro + Mosaic, Futsū no Joshikōsei ga Locodol Yattemita) and Ayumi Sekine (scripts on Inari Kon Kon, WATAMOTE) are writing the scenario, and Mika Yamamoto (Tiger & Bunny The Movie -The Rising-, Sengoku Basara 4's alternate costume designs) designed the characters. Assez Finaud Fabric and feel. (My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU TOO!, Futsū no Joshikōsei ga Locodol Yattemita, Minami-ke Tadaima) are producing the anime for Earth Star Entertainment.

The character Merry, as voiced by Hanae, sings the opening theme song "Makura no Danshi." Masayoshi Ōishi (Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun's "Kimi Janakya Dame Mitai") wrote the music and lyrics of the "cheerful pop melody," and arranged the song.

The anime premiered in Japan on July 13 on Tokyo MX, Sun TV, and other stations. The DVD release of the anime will include an original anime episode that will not air on television. The November 27 DVD will also include all 12 television episodes of the anime, the creditless opening, and an audio commentary by the cast and staff.
