5-member hip-hop group creates 2 songs for film opening on February 27

The staff of the live-action film adaptation of Gatarō Man's Chinyūki ~Tarō to Yukai na Nakama-tachi~ manga announced on Friday that the five-member hip-hop unit RIP SLYME (pictured at right) will perform both the opening and the ending theme songs for the film.

The opening theme is titled "Take It Easy" and the ending theme song is titled "Drop!." RIP SLYME created both songs specifically for the film. The unit's 23rd single with both songs will ship on March 2. The group previously performed the opening theme song for the Gantz TV anime series.

The film will open in Japan on February 27. The website for the film streamed a teaser video last month.

Ken'ichi Matsuyama (live-action Death Note movies, Gantz, Bunny Drop) stars in the film. Yuudai Yamaguchi (Cromartie High: The Movie, Deadball) is directing the film. Atsushi Ōkawara — a member of Japanese comedy trio Onigashima — and Shū Matsubara (Mr. Osomatsu) are writing the script.

Chinyūki spoofs adventure manga by retelling Journey to the West, the Chinese literary classic. In the story, a violent, trouble-making kabuki actor joins a traveling monk (who happens to be have been transformed into a monkey by a curse) on a colorful journey west to ancient southern Asia.

Gatarō Man serialized the manga in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump from 1990 to 1992, and Shueisha published six compiled book volumes for the manga. The series has around 4 million copies in print. The manga received a four-episode OVA adaptation in 2009. Gatarō Man launched a sequel titled Chinyūki 2 ~Yume no Inzei Seikatsu-hen~ in Weekly Shonen Jump 2009, and ended it in 2010. Shueisha published four compiled volumes of the manga.
