Kizumonogatari Opens at #3 Below Star Wars, Yo-kai Watch

Orange, Chibi Maruko-chan rank #4, #10; Girls & Panzer, Kamen Rider drop off chart

Kizumonogatari I: Tekketsu-hen, the first film in the trilogy adapting NisiOisin's light novel of the same name, opened at #3 at the Japanese box office this past weekend. It sold 243,702 tickets for 322,509,300 yen (about US$2.737 milllion) in 108 theaters by the end of the extended three-day holiday weekend. During just Saturday and Sunday, it sold 131,973 tickets for 177,058,000 yen (US$1.503 million) — for a strong per-screen average of 1.63 million yen (US$13,800).

For just Saturday and Sunday, Star Wars: The Force Awakens ranked #1 in weekend ticket sales for a second weekend in a row. It sold 391,207 tickets for 619,644,800 yen (US$5.259 million). It has earned over 8.2 billion yen (US$70 million) as of Monday, January 11, and is poised to top 10 billion yen (US$85 million) by mid-January.

Eiga Yo-kai Watch: Enma Daioh to Itsutsu no Monogatari da Nyan!, the second film in the Yo-kai Watch franchise, stayed at #2 in ticket sales in its fourth weekend. It also remained #2 in money earned at the box office for the fourth straight weekend. It sold 258,016 tickets in 358 theaters for 297,224,600 yen (US$2.52 million), and it now has a grand total of 4.6 billion yen (US$39 million). It is trending about 2 billion yen (US$17 million) below its 2014 predecessor, Yo-kai Watch: Tanjō no Himitsu da Nyan! (Yo-kai Watch the Movie: It's the Secret of Birth, Meow!).

The live-action film of Ichigo Takano's Orange manga dropped from #3 to #4 in its fifth weekend on 302 theaters.

Eiga Chibi Maruko-chan: Italia kara Kita Shōnen, the first new anime film for Momoko Sakura's Chibi Maruko-chan manga in 23 years, also dropped from #6 to #10 on 231 theaters in its third weekend.

The Girls und Panzer film dropped from #9 off the chart in its eighth weekend. The Kamen Rider x Kamen Rider Ghost & Drive Chō Movie Taisen crossover film also fell from #10 off the chart in its fifth weekend.
