Fire Emblem Fates' Western Release Won't Include Japanese Audio

Nintendo RPG to ship February 19

Nintendo confirmed with video game news website Polygon on Friday that the western release of Fire Emblem Fates Nintendo 3DS game will only contain English audio.

Although the previous game in the Fire Emblem series, Fire Emblem: Awakening, contained a menu option to change the voice language, this option was missing from Fire Emblem Fates' menu. Polygon posted a 2.5 hour gameplay video on Thursday where viewers can see the missing option.

Polygon added that Nintendo declined to comment further on why the Japanese audio was removed or if it would be available in the future.

Nintendo also removed the "petting" feature from the Western release of the game. In the Japanese version, the player must "pet" one of their party member's face by rubbing on the screen or tapping on the stylus in order to raise their support level. In the western version, the live-2D animated sequence is still included without the "petting" feature. The player still receives the support bonuses.

The company also recently revealed the removal of a controversial dialogue segment in the game relating to a character named Soleil, who gets flustered around women. In a conversation with the male protagonist he slips a "magic potion" into her drink without her knowledge, so she magically sees men as women and vice-versa. The idea was to help her "practice" around women, so when the potion wears off she is no longer distracted around them. At the end, she falls in love with the male protagonist.

Nintendo stated regarding the removed conversation that there will be "no expression which might be considered as gay conversion or drugging that occurs between characters," and confirmed that the game's same-sex marriage options will still be present.

Nintendo shipped Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright and Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest in Japan on June 25, and will release the games on February 19 in the West.
