THR: Sequel to Netflix's Death Note Film in the Works

posted on by Karen Ressler
Upcoming Mortal Kombat film's Greg Russo reportedly writing script

Entertainment news website The Hollywood Reporter (THR) reported in an article about Netflix movies on Wednesday that Netflix is developing a sequel to its live-action Death Note film. Greg Russo, the writer for upcoming Mortal Kombat, Resident Evil and F.E.A.R. films, is penning the script.

The article also notes that Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos called the 2017 Death Note film a "sizable" success.

Director Adam Wingard said after the film premiered that he originally pitched the title as "at least a two-film series, maybe three," but he added that the first film was written to have an ending, as "sequels are never guaranteed."

The film premiered via streaming on Netflix on Friday. It stars Nat Wolff as Light Turner, Keith Stanfield as L, Margaret Qualley as Mia Sutton, Willem Dafoe as the voice of Ryuk, Paul Nakauchi as Watari, and Shea Whigham as James Turner.

In Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata's original 2003-2006 supernatural suspense manga, teenager Light Yagami finds a notebook with which he can put people to death by writing their names. He begins a self-anointed crusade against the criminals of the world, and a cat-and-mouse game begins with the authorities and one idiosyncratic genius detective.

Thanks to Reuben for the news tip.
