Beck's Harold Sakuishi presented with "International Spotlight Award"

Anime News Network's coverage of New York Comic-Con 2018 is sponsored by Good Smile Company's Grand Summoners.

The Harvey Awards, which honors outstanding work in comics and sequential art, awarded Kabi Nagata's My Lesbian Experience with Loneliness manga with the Best Manga award at New York Comic Con on Friday. The manga competed against My Brother’s Husband (Gengoroh Tagame), My Hero Academia (Kōhei Horikoshi), Tokyo Ghoul (Sui Ishida), and your name. (Makoto Shinkai, Ranmaru Kotone). This is the first year that the Harvey Awards included a Best Manga category.

Seven Seas released My Lesbian Experience with Loneliness, translated by Jocelyne Allen, in the United States in June 2017. The company also released Nagata's My Solo Exchange Diary sequel in June.

The event also awarded manga creator Harold Sakuishi (Beck, Seven Shakespeares) with the "International Spotlight Award." Sakuishi attended the event. The Harvey Awards presented the first Harvey Awards International Spotlight award to manga artist Hiro Mashima (Fairy Tail, Rave Master) last year.

In previous years, manga were nominated alongside other comics in the "Best American Edition of Foreign Material" category. The last manga to win the category was Hajime Isayama's Attack on Titan in 2014. One-Punch Man and Showa: A History of Japan (1953-1989) were nominated in 2016 but did not win.

"Best American Edition of Foreign Material" is no longer a category, but there was also a new category for "Best European Book" this year.

Unlike the Eisner Awards and other awards in the North American comic book industry, the Harvey Awards are nominated and selected by the comic book professionals themselves.
