Kodansha revealed on Thursday that Hinowa Kōzuki's Yōkai Apāto no Yūga na Nichijō (Elegant Yokai Apartment Life) light novel series is getting a stage play adaptation.
The stage play will star: (from left to right in above image)
- Takahisa Maeyama as Yūshi Inaba
- Junya Komatsu as Mizuki Hase
- Ryō Saeki as Ryū-san
Tsuneyasu Motoyoshi is directing the play, and Aoto Tani is writing the script. The play will run in Tokyo at the Kinokuniya Sazan Theatre Takashimaya from January 11-27.
The story of Hinowa Kōzuki's original novels centers on Yūshi Inaba, a 16-year-old boy whose parents died three years ago. He moved into his uncle's house, but resolved to move into a dormitory in high school. Those plans were dashed when that dormitory burned down. He eventually finds an apartment with cheap 25,000-yen (about US$220) rent. Yūshi finds out too late that the apartment is home to supernatural creatures such as ghosts, yōkai, and mononoke, and his daily life becomes embroiled in the eccentric apartment.
Kōzuki launched the light novel series in 2003, and concluded it in 2009 with 10 volumes (and a later side-story collection in 2013). Kōzuki passed away in December 2014. Waka Miyama launched a manga adaptation in Kodansha's Monthly Shonen Sirius magazine in 2011, and Kodansha published the 16th compiled volume on April 9. Kodansha Comics is releasing the manga adaptation in English.
A television anime adaptation of the novels and manga premiered in July 2017 and aired for 26 episodes. Crunchyroll streamed the series as it aired in Japan.
