Oya-san to Boku Manga Returns After Passing of Lead Character's Real-Life Inspiration

Shinchosha's Daily Shincho website revealed on Wednesday that Tarō Yabe will resume his Oya-san to Boku (Landlady and Me) essay manga on Thursday after the manga went on hiatus in August following the the death of Yabe's elderly landlady, the subject of the manga.
Yabe said in a message that starting the manga again was "painful but enjoyable, and lonely but happy." He said that his landlady had once said to him that talking to him made her feel like she was able to see her departed friends and family once again, so he would be glad if he could similarly meet his landlady again by drawing the manga.
The manga is based on his real life experiences with his landlady.
The manga originally serialized in Shinchosha's Shōsetsu Shinchō novel magazine beginning in 2016, and Shinchosha published a compiled volume last October. Within three months, the book had sold 200,000 copies, and has since sold 660,000 copies. The second serialization launched in Weekly Shinchō magazine on April 25.
The manga inspired an anime short in January and won the short work prize at the 22nd Annual Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize awards in April.
Oya-san to Boku is Yabe's debut manga. He is best known as part of the comedy duo Karateka. His father, Mitsunori Yabe, was a picture book author.
