Chi's Sweet Home Manga Author Kanata Konami in Free London Masterclass on May 21

posted on by Andrew Osmond
Event at Embassy of Japan from 2 p.m.

There will be a Manga Masterclass at London's Embassy of Japan on Tuesday May 21, featuring Chi's Sweet Home manga author Kanata Konami. The event is free but must be booked at the above link; it runs from 2 p.m.

Vertical licensed Chi's Sweet Home in 2009. The manga is about a kitten who gets lost after walking out into the real world for the first time. A boy named Yōhei Yamada discovers her, but the Yamada family's apartment building prohibits pets. After failing to find a new home, the Yamadas decide to defy the rules and raise Chi themselves. Most of Chi's coming-of-age stories revolve around the Yamadas or the cats, dogs, and the occasional rabbit that live in the neighborhood.

The manga inspired two television anime series in 2008 and 2009.

The Embassy event is described as follows:

Kanata Konami is a manga artist who has been publishing compelling manga for over 30 years. Most of her work focuses around cats in the community. She is best known for Chi's Sweet Home, which has been published in 23 countries and a number of languages including English. Her work is featured as part of the Citi exhibition: Manga マンガ at the British Museum. In this masterclass at the Embassy of Japan she will explain her creative process, showcase manga techniques, and host a question and answer session. A not to be missed opportunity for anyone creating their own comics and manga to get insight from an industry professional who is visiting from Japan.

Prior registration essential. You must present photo ID on the day to gain access to the embassy. Please note, registering on Eventbrite constitues a registration of interest and does not guarantee entry. We shall be contacting successful applicants individually by email.
