AQUAPLUS Reveals New Utawarerumono Game With New Characters

Kazuya Nakai, Atsumi Tanezaki star in new game

AQUAPLUS announced on Tuesday that it is producing a new game for its Utawarerumono game series. AQUAPLUS revealed the cast and visuals for the main characters and a background. AQUAPLUS opened a teaser site with a teaser video and theme song for the new game on Tuesday (the video can be viewed by accessing the site). AQUAPLUS opened the site earlier on Tuesday, but took it down after too much traffic to the site. It was later re-opened on the same day.

The game's cast includes:

Kazuya Nakai as Akuta

Atsumi Tanezaki as Minagi

This week's issue of Kadokawa's Weekly Famitsu magazine will reveal more information on the game on Thursday, but the Famitsu.com website teased that the game will once again begin with a protagonist who has lost his memories and meeting the story's heroine, as in the previous games in the series.

The Utawarerumono series is set in a Japanese-themed world where various realms vie for military and political power. The games center on various characters who fight to carve their own place and loyalty in the world, centering on protagonists who have a connection to the world's obscure past.

Aquaplus released Leaf's original Utawarerumono adult visual novel for PC in 2002. The adventure simulation game takes place in a world where people have animal ears and tails, and rival generals battle for supremacy. Sting developed a PlayStation 2 port, titled Utawarerumono: Chiriyukumono e no Komoriuta, which Aquaplus released in 2006. A PlayStation Portable port debuted in 2009. Aquaplus developed a remake of the game that launched for the PS4 and PS Vita in Japan in April 2018. NIS America will release the game in the West for the PS4 and PS Vita in early 2020 with the title Utawarerumono: Prelude to the Fallen.

The Utawarerumono: Itsuwari no Kamen (Utawarerumono: Mask of Deception) game shipped for PS4, PS3, and PS Vita in Japan in September 2015, and it shipped for PS4 and PS Vita in the West in May 2017. Utawarerumono: Mask of Truth (Utawarerumono: Futari no Hakuoro), the third installment in the Utawarerumono trilogy, debuted in Japan for PS3, PS4, and PS Vita in September 2016. The game shipped for PS4 and PS Vita in the West last September.

The original game inspired a 2006 television anime series, a 2007 manga, and a 2009 original video anime series. ADV Films originally licensed the first Utawarerumono television anime, but FUNimation later picked up the license. The television anime adaptation of Utawarerumono: Itsuwari no Kamen premiered in Japan in October 2015. Crunchyroll streamed the series as it aired in Japan, and Sentai Filmworks released the series on home video.
