Manga Artist Shinichi Ishizuka Gives London Talk on July 11

Author of music manga Blue Giant speaks at Asia House, talk at 6.45 p.m.

Tickets are available for a London talk by the manga artist Shinichi Ishizuka, author of the music-themed manga Blue Giant.

Entitled "Music & Manga: A Vision of the Sound," the talk will take place on Thursday July 11 from 6.45 p.m. to 9 p.m. The venue is Asia House on New Cavendish Street, between Regent's Park and Bond Street underground stations (scroll down at the above link for a map).

The event is described by Eventbrite as follows:

Asia House is delighted to welcome award-winning manga artist Shinichi Ishizuka and his editor Dai Katsuki to discuss Ishizuka's successful series Blue Giant and Blue Giant Supreme. This event is in celebration of the Citi exhibition Manga at The British Museum (23 May – 26 August 2019).

Blue Giant and Blue Giant Supreme (featured in The British Museum's Manga exhibition) are series that centre around a young saxophonist, Dai Miyamoto, his passion for jazz and the pursuit of his dream to become the world's best tenor sax player. In this series, Ishizuka masterfully crafts sound and vibe to explode from the pages visually replicating what one would hear and feel. The vertical, tightly drawn lines and sound effect symbols uniquely capture the raw emotion and fervour of jazz.

In this event, the artist and editor will discuss the challenges and pleasures of creating a story manga and explore the integral depiction of sound in the series. The discussion will include insights into the collaborative processes and relationship of the artist and editor in the creation of story manga. There will be an opportunity for the audience to ask the speakers questions at the end of the talk.

Our moderator for the evening will be Professor Nicole Coolidge Rousmaniere, IFAC Handa Curator of Japanese Arts at The British Museum and lead curator of the Citi exhibition Manga.

Please note that Shinichi Ishizuka and Dai Katsuki will speak in Japanese and there will be live interpreting into English.
