KC Global Media, headed by former Sony Pictures Television executives, acquire channels

Entertainment news magazine Variety reported on Tuesday that KC Global Media, a media company headed by former Sony Pictures Television executives Andy Kaplan and George Chien (seen right) have acquired three of Sony's Asian television channels, including the Southeast Asian AXN and Animax Asia channels, and the South Korean and Southeast Asian Sony One channel.

Kaplan was the president of Sony Worldwide Networks from 2002 to 2018, while Chien was the former executive vice president of of Sony Pictures Television Media Networks.

Variety's report indicated that Sony's decision to sell the three channels is part of a new content licensing focus for the company.

All three channels have a history of airing anime, but Animax Asia is an anime-exclusive channel, the first of its kind in Asia when it debuted in 2004. AXN airs primarily action-themed shows imported from the United States, while Sony One airs primarily Korean drama shows.
