Manga Jiman 2022 Competition Details

posted on by Andrew Osmond
Closing date for entries is December 5, the theme this year is 'connect.'

Details of the sixteenth annual Manga Jiman contest, in which UK artists are encouraged to create their own original strips, have been announced by the Embassy of Japan. The closing date for entries is December 5.

The manga entries should make some reference to connect; the theme is open to interpretation.

Entrants 14 and over should create a story told across six to eight pages (full rules).

The first prize will be a prize from the Japanese Gallery, Kensington. Runners-up will receive prizes including an A4 Scansnap scanner from PFU ltd, a digital camera from RICOH UK Ltd, luxury Japanese sweets from Minamoto Kitchoan, gift vouchers for Japan Centre, electrical goods from Daikin and manga publications from UK manga publishers SelfMade Hero and Fanfare, among other prizes.

There are also separate categories for entrants wishing to create a yonkoma manga (a story told in 4 comic strip panels on one page). "Yonkoma Youth" is for entrants aged from 11 to 13, while "Yonkoma 14+" is for entrants aged 14 and over. The rules for these categories are available here. Again, the entries must refer to connect. The first prizes will be an original manga page from Manga Originals (for "Yonkoma Youth") and an original animation cel (for "Yonkoma 14+"). Entrants to Yonkoma 14+ are also permitted to submit entries to Manga Jiman, should they wish to do so.

For all categories, the artwork should be sent with an entry form, which can be downloaded from https://www.uk.emb-japan.go.jp/itpr_en/manga2022.html. Entries should be sent to:
