The Japanese Consulate in Kolkata and HIDCO opened the Manga Hokusai Manga exhibit at Nazrul Tirtha, New Town, Kolkata on Friday. Artist Shubhaprasanna Bhattacharjee inaugurated the exhibit, which will be open from November 11 through November 28.

Managing director of HIDCO Debasish Sen, Japanese consul general Koichi Nakagawa, and vice-consul Risa Tamura also attended the inauguration.

The exhibit displays Edo period master artist Katsushika Hokusai's artwork alongside artwork illustrating the history of the manga industry. Consul general Nakagawa stated in his address that the origins of manga can be traced as far back as the 12th century.

The Consulate-General of Japan in Chennai hosted the exhibition in October.

The compiled collection of Hokusai's artwork titled Hokusai Manga is available in print in 15 volumes.
