New York-Tokyo Unveils New Style of Film Festival

NYTFGP2008 FESTIVAL PART ONE
SUN SEP.28 – FRI OCT.17
NYU CANTOR, TRIBECA CINEMAS, ANTHOLOGY FILM ARCHIVES

Sep. 15, 2008, New York, NY - The constant flow of unique, eye-catching film and animation out of Japan has been taking place for several years now, and New York-Tokyo has been dedicated to exposing these wonderful films to audiences stateside since 2001, with that year's NY Anime Film Festival, 2003's New York-Tokyo Film Festival, and our long-running Monthly Director's Series,
In 2008 alone, nearly 300 films are being released out of Japan, and we are introducing 150 of those films to our readers on the New York-Tokyo website with the New York-Tokyo Film Grand Prix (NYTFGP)
The project has major two parts and purposes; First, It acts as a constantly updated online encyclopedia of Japanese films from the current year. Second, for one month of each year, the NYTFGP is a place where readers can vote on the films that they want to see the most! Those films that receive the most votes will then be screened at the NYTFGP FESTIVAL in the following month. NYTFGP FESTIVAL also includes NYT-selected films, in addition to the audience-voted winners.
And now the NYTFGP2008 FESTIVAL: Part One is starting. It begins with an advanced screening on September 28th at NYU Cantor and moves on to its official start on October 7th, followed by a steady stream of premieres, one film per evening, at Tribeca Cinemas and Anthology archives.
From “77 BOADRUM,” which documented Japan's musical innovators THE BOREDOMS's performance by 77 drummers in NYC, to “ASYL: PARKS AND LOVE HOTEL” which won the "Best First Feature Film" award at the 2008 Berlin International Film Festival, Part One premieres very inspiring pieces by young, bold directors which have made fresh sensations in Japan this year. With the viewings, many directors of those films will be at the theaters to discuss their works.
Confirmed guests: Jun Kawaguchi (77BOADRUM director), Izuru Kumasaka (ASYL director), Shōgen (BLOODY SNAKE UNDER THE SUN main cast), Anji Matsumoto (KAMACHOP director) and more.
