The Click
September 2nd - September 8th

by Brian Hanson,

Greetings, welcome, and other such salutations! I'm writing about anime on TV, that you can watch, so stick around and read it if you'd like to find that out. But be forewarned; these listings and such can be a tricky, devilish mistress to navigate, unless you heed the facts that all dates and times are tentative, and all times listed are eastern. That time-zone thing, you know.

My apologies, please, if this week's iteration of The Click is decidedly dry and unfunny, and rife with grammatical errors and paranoid diatribes about the Illuminati and the Reptoid alliance. I'm fighting a nasty head cold, and it seems the effectiveness of DayQuil is utterly nil. Regardless, I'll keep writing words into sentences for as long as my head doesn't start leaking precious fluids.

And, since YTV is shifting around their long-stagnant “Bionix” schedule, while Razer keeps on rockin' with new episodes of fresh Funimation material, I'd like to propose this week “Canada Week.” Right now, I'm going to put Strange Brew in the DVD player, open up a cold Molson's, don my best lumberjack outfit, and salute each and every moose I see. You've earned it, Canada; your anime TV offerings this week utterly trump our own. We admit defeat.

Bleach
(YTV)
Friday September 8 10:30pm - Episode 1 "The Day I Became a Shinigami" (Tentative Title)

This is a tentative title because it's a fan-approved translation of the original Japanese title, and I don't want to be held responsible for getting anybody's hopes up over the use of the word “Shinigami” in the English dub. Some people go nuts over that stuff.

Synopsis: Ichigo Kurosaki can see ghosts, gets mixed up with the feisty Rukia of the “Soul Society,” as well as other things that essentially set up the rest of the show. Catch it a good 26 hours before us Americans do, Canadians!

Eureka 7
(Cartoon Network)
Sunday September 3 1:00am - Episode 19 "Acperience 2" (Repeats Sun Sep 3 4:00am)

Last week there was some minor brouhaha over whether or not Eureka 7 would see it's second half of 26 episodes to fruition; adult swim had the series repeat after episode 26, so I figured everyone had simply thrown in the proverbial Eureka 7 towel. Not so, it appears; a recent Adult Swim schedule update has the show going onward and upward towards its actual conclusion – still at the mediocre 1:00am timeslot, however.

Synopsis: Eureka's illness grows more and more severe, with the crew of the Gekko thinking her sickness is somehow tied to the mines, but the foolhardy lass finds herself trapped in said mines with her Nirvash, leading Renton to put on his special Superman underpants in order to muster up the courage to dive into the depths to save her.

OTHER PREMIERES:

Basilisk
(Razer)
Thursday September 7 5:30pm - Episode 10 "Divine Mandate" (Repeats Fri Sep 8 12:30am, 1:00pm)

Lord Ieyasu of the shogun tallies the ongoing slaughter between the rival Kouga and Iga ninja clans, in order to label the triumphant clan with the task of being the shogun's official goons. But, like any great rivalry, from Brian Hanson and Dominic's Great Third-Grade NES Cartridge War up to... wars and stuff, the battle is long and vicious, and did I mention long?

Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo
(Cartoon Network)
Saturday September 2 10:00pm - Episode 43 "Ha-le Oo-pu Ah-ah"

Bo-bobo production staff fires their episode title guy; the company Gorilla, Mittens, quickly comes up with a new title for this week's episode. The episode is apparently about Bo-bobo taking the villainous Halekulani on a fun-filled Bo-bobo-type week to remind the money-crazed beefcake of what's really important in the world. Of course, Bo-bobo episodes typically aren't about anything. Aside from maybe ham.

Eureka 7
(YTV)
Friday September 8 9:30pm - Episode 1 "Blue Monday"

Fellow Canadians: there is a show called “Eureka 7” that will be airing on your half of our continent this coming Friday night. It is a good show, with fun characters and animation, and believe it will perform better on YTV's younger-skewing demographic than it has thus far on Adult Swim. It involves a protagonist named Renton Thurston, who is the son of a famous “lifter” and lives with his cranky mechanic grandpa until a gang of outlaws and lifting enthusiasts called the “Gekkostate” arrive in town and turn his life asunder. Hopefully that logline will inspire you all to watch. If not, then I have failed.

Fullmetal Alchemist
(YTV)
Friday September 8 10:00pm - Episode 28 "All Is One, One Is All" (Repeats Sat Sep 9 1:00am)

Izumi, Ed and Al's tough-as-nails Alchemy teacher, takes the boys for a little nostalgia trip; the Island of Yock, a small deserted island where the boys were left to fend for themselves until the discovered the truth behind Izumi's cryptic phrase, “all is one, one is all.” It's also the title of the episode! Those cheeky devils.

Inuyasha
(YTV)
Friday September 8 9:00pm - Episode 157 "Destroy Naraku With Adamant Barrage" (Repeats Sat Sep 9 2:00am)

This latest Inuyasha half-hour entertainment program involves: Hosenki challenges Inuyasha to a no-holds-barred duel to the death, but our smitten half-demon dog-boy refuses the challenge in order to aide Kagome and the rest of his band of somewhat-merry men and women.

Naruto
(Cartoon Network)
Saturday September 2 9:00pm - Episode 50 "The Fifth Gate: A Splendid Ninja is Born"

Rock Lee unlocks some serious ass-kicking powers, causing a massive power build-up of DBZ-like proportions. But unlike DBZ, where such power only resulted in lots of grunting from possibly stomachaches or constipation, can the bowl-haired “taijutsu master” survive the strain on his body?

(YTV)
Friday September 8 8:00pm - Episode TBA (Repeats Sat Sep 9 2:30am)

There HAS to be a new episode here. Considering YTV originally stopped at episode 37 (or was it 38? 36?) in order to give Viz more time to dub the remaining episodes, and that Cartoon Network is currently running episode 50, methinks they simply ARE airing new episodes but simply don't feel like informing anybody of this fact. Or maybe they are, with commercials and stuff. Not that I would be able to find that out; essentially what I'm saying is, I think YTV is giving me one giant, metaphorical middle finger, with my name written on it in Sharpie, followed by the word “sux.”

Pokemon
(Cartoon Network)
Friday September 8 8:30pm - Episode 417 "Fear Factor Phony"

Will Pokemon's ninth season start off with a bang or a whimper? Or possibly a thud? What about a ka-bong? We can all find out this Friday, when the show starts airing on its new home on basic cable. In the actual episode, plucky young Ash Ketchum and his buddies wander into a ghost town rife with angry, music playing Psychic Pokemon. Such a bizarre premise has to be somewhat entertaining! Unless the dub is ear-piercingly awful!

Pokemon Chronicles
(Cartoon Network)
Saturday September 2 7:30pm - Episode 15 "Putting the Air Back in Aerodactyl"

Continuing along Cartoon Network's recent trend of milking the ailing Pokemon franchise dry, this Pokemon spin-off deal involves Gary, Ash's sworn nemesis, reviving a prehistoric, fossilized Pokemon. Perhaps Michael Crichton should consider legal action here.

Samurai 7
(Independent Film Channel)
Saturday September 2 10:30pm - Episode 23 "The Lies" (Repeats Sun Sep 3 1:30am, Thu Sep 7 11:30pm, Fri Sep 8 2:30am)

As Kambei leads the remaining loyal samurai to wage war against the corrupt capitol, Katsushiro discovers a band of Ukyo's men attempting to set the besieged Kanna village ablaze. Naturally, they have a bit of a problem with that.

(Razer)
Thursday September 7 5:00pm - Episode 10 "The Journey" (Repeats Fri Sep 8 12:00am, 12:30pm)

“Somebody Got Murdered” is not only a really great Clash song, it's also a fitting description for this episode! Being able to tie unrelated things to song titles is truly the height of wit. (It also happens to be what's playing on my iTunes right now.) The “Somebody” who “Got” murdered would be an Imperial Envoy, and the only clue left behind, a bloodied samurai sword, causes a citywide samurai roundup, which does not bode well for our fellow samurai heroes.

Trinity Blood
(Razer)
Thursday September 7 6:00pm - Episode 10 "Lucifer's Choice" (Repeats Fri Sep 8 1:00am, 1:30pm)

Confound this accursed internet machine! All I ever wanted was perhaps some sort of official, Funimation-sanctioned plot synopsis for this episode; instead all I was greeted with was this grotesque, blank space of despair. Making up my own plots for anime has since lost its luster, so instead I will just sit here and sulk. And play Tetris.

Yu-Gi-Oh! GX
(YTV)
-Saturday September 2 12:00pm - Episode 49 "Rise of the Sacred Beasts, Part 2"
-Friday September 8 6:00pm - Episode 50 "Magna Chum Laude"

Lordy, Yu-Gi-Oh GX is everywhere now. So let's get this overwith: Jaden caps off his epic two-part battle with Kagemaru, and the goofy but loveable Chumley wins an illustration contest but has difficulty battling with his cards instead of drawing them.

(Cartoon Network)
-Tuesday September 5 5:30pm - Episode 63 "Curry Worries"
-Wednesday September 6 5:30pm - Episode 64 "Camaraderie Contest"
-Thursday September 7 5:30pm - Episode 65 "No Pain, No Game"
-Friday September 8 5:30pm - Episode 66 "Going Bananas"

No Yu-Gi-Oh on Labor Day, because battling cards would be blasphemous. Somehow. Later in the week, there's episodes involving curry, fights over best-friendmanship, and even a clip show!

Zatch Bell
(Cartoon Network)
Saturday September 2 9:30pm - Episode 65 "Ponygon's Lightning Speed"

Ponygon, the oft-denigrated comedy relief in this show full of equally goofy creatures, finally gets his chance to shine. Literally.

(YTV)
Friday September 8 8:30pm - Episode 36 "Collision: Zatch vs. Naomi"

Zatch clashes with his pre-school nemesis, the toothy Naomi, while a lion escapes from the zoo where Zatch's buddy Kiyo and other tertiary buddies happened to be enjoying the afternoon.

MOVIES/SPECIALS

Dead Leaves
(Encore Action)
Saturday September 2 12:00am

When they aired this once, I said nothing. When they aired this thrice, I said nothing. When they aired it fourty-five times in one afternoon, I said nothing. But I'll say something now: I sure am running out of things to say about it.

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon
(Cartoon Network)
Friday September 8 8:00pm

Remember what I said earlier, about Cartoon Network milking Pokemon dry? Here's another example to that hypothesis; a half-hour special where the Pokemon actually talk!Gimmicky enough, you think? I think this special was made to promote a Nintendo DS game in Japan, but don't quote me on that.

That's all I'm physically capable of today, folks. I'm going to lie down now and let this nice doctor from the Dark Ages bleed all the demons out of my body. See you next week! Oh, and here's some repeats. Some good'uns lie below!
