The Click
April 27th - May 4th

by Brian Hanson,

A most hardcore and extreme hello, faithful readers! After having "slammed" many cases of "Mountain Dews" while doing barrel-360-flipmode-sidewinder-spin-tricks off the grand canyon on a skateboard made out of searing hot coals and poisonous lye, as well as breaking empty beer bottles over the heads of homeless people if for no other reason than because I am X-Treme, we're back for another standard week featuring pretty much the same lineup of anime on TV that you'd expect, with a few minor but pleasant surprises therein.

Seeing as I lack any video games to talk about, soulless promotional campaigns to discuss, or obscene bail amounts to plead for, let's just go on ahead with the listings.

Eureka 7
(Cartoon Network)
Sunday April 29 1:00am - Episode 50 "Wish Upon a Star" (Repeats Sun Apr 29 4:00am)

I suppose the full title would probably be "When You Wish Upon a Star" For Eureka 7's grand finale, but it would probably be a rather crappy send-off to a fine series to be served with a copyright infringement lawsuit from Disney, so I can see why they shortened it.

I have always felt like Eureka 7 simply arrived a few years too late to have the impact and ratings it needed. Had Renton Thurston's highfalutin', robot-surfin' extravaganza hit the Cartoon Network during their prime Toonami days, when that elusive 12-17 year old demographic flocked to the station in droves, I'm sure the show's ratings and awareness would have been massive. Certainly in comparison to the show's current "modest" success and niche ratings. Oh, and there would've been much gnashing of fanboy teeth on rec.arts.anime.misc over "pointless" edits! And "Edit Lists"! Good times.

The actual episode finale itself features Renton saving Eureka who is trying to save everyone else and Holland and all the other characters attempt to save the planet, and certainly those of you who've been keeping close tabs on the series up to this point would do well to see how this unexpectedly dark yet colorful kid-in-space opera wraps up.

PREMIERES:

Basilisk
(Independent Film Channel)
Friday May 4 11:30pm - Episode 18 "A Dawn Without Light" (Repeats Sat May 5 4:55am)

It's hard out there for a ninja, always fighting with your centuries-old rivals, trying to acquire magical scrolls, coping with your mentor and leader's über-violent death while trying to find a safe haven, et cetera. Must suck.

Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad
(MuchMusic)
-Sunday April 29 3:00pm - Episode 15 "Back to School" (Repeats Mon Apr 30 12:00am, Tue May 1 7:00pm, Wed May 2 12:00am, 4:00pm)
-Sunday April 29 3:30pm - Episode 16 "Indies" (Repeats Mon Apr 30 12:30am, Tue May 1 7:30pm, Wed May 2 12:30am, 4:30pm)

Good gravy, Beck is re-run an awful lot throughout the week. Which means, my esteemed Canadian friends, that you have literally no excuse to miss this fine and refreshingly down-to-earth series. This week, the plucky Koyuki starts his first day of high school, and all the problems that entails, while the band struggles to get a recording contract. I have often told myself, "if Fergie can land herself a lucrative recording contract and an album produced by will.i.am, I can too!" But deep down, I know I am not Fergilicious enough.

Bleach
(Cartoon Network)
Sunday April 29 12:00am - Episode 31 (Repeats Sun Apr 29 3:00am)

Bleach is a show known for its gruesome and frequent bloodletting - odd, then, that the actual body count is so low. I guess graphic violence is a-ok so long as there are no fatalities? Anyway, geysers of blood abound on this week's Bleach, as Ichigo wraps up his duel against Renji.

Blood+
(Cartoon Network)
Sunday April 29 12:30am - Episode 7 "I Must Do It" (Repeats Sun Apr 29 3:30am)

For those of you not paying much attention, Blood+ is that special type of series that's literally high on production values while being very tepid in the "story" and "characters" category. But damned if the animation, design, and music aren't pretty as hell. While sitting there agape at the abundance of expertly-crafted color and sound, I guess there's some story here about Riku and Kai brotherly bonding in the shadow of their father's mysterious death.

Cowboy Bebop
(Razer)
Sunday April 29 9:00pm - Episode 19 "Wild Horses"

In the wake of the rising popularity of swishy, androgynous anime pretty-boy protagonists, it's awfully nice to know that there's still room for your standard gun-toting badass, as Spike Spiegel kicks all seven flavors of ass in this episode while saving his sequestered comrades from the "Starship Pirates."

Elemental Gelade
(ImaginAsianTV)
Tuesday May 1 5:00pm - Episode 14 "Edel Reid Hunter Reappears" (Repeats Tue May 1 8:00pm, Wed May 2 12:30am, 12:00pm)

Ren, that debonair, swashbuckling space pirate, resorts to new means to keep his sought-after beau, Cou, safe from those nefarious Edel Reid Hunters. Warning: discussing the names and random nouns used in this series in public may confuse passers-by that you are speaking in tongues.

Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo
(ImaginAsianTV)
Tuesday May 1 6:30pm - Episode 14 "The Wandering Heart" (Repeats Tue May 1 9:30pm, Wed May 2 2:00am, 1:30pm)

Like pretty much all sci-fi re-imaginings of classical imperial-era literature, Gankutsuou contains much discussion of marriage, interstellar trade routes, and governmental corruption and intrigue. And did I mention that it's in space!?!

Gundam SEED Destiny
(YTV)
Friday May 4 9:30pm - Episode 9 "Prideful Fang" (Repeats Sat May 5 1:30am)

Nothing confuses me more in science fiction than when elaborate and unnecessary made-up jargon is thrown around to remind the viewer, just in case they forgot, that this show is in the future and in space. Thanks, Gundam SEED Destiny - I sort of gathered that your series takes place in the future, considering there are flying robots and orbiting space colonies; you don't really need to throw around dozens of pointless acronyms like PLANT or whatever. Aside from that, this week's Gundam SEED Destiny episode is, IN CANADA, about the Earth Alliance gaining the upper hand via nuclear weapons merely a day after The Big War "officially" breaks out.

Hikaru no Go
(ImaginAsianTV)
-Monday April 30 8:30am - Episode 23 "The Room of Yugen" (Repeats Tue May 1 5:00am)
-Tuesday May 1 8:30am - Episode 24 "Ouza vs. Akira" (Repeats Wed May 2 5:00am)
-Wednesday May 2 8:30am - Episode 25 "Sai's Sword Unsheathed" (Repeats Thu May 3 5:00am)
-Thursday May 3 8:30am - Episode 26 "The Greatest Wall For Hikaru" (Repeats Fri May 4 5:00am)

Either ImaginAsianTV hasn't licensed Hikaru no Go beyond 26 episodes, or the series is taking a little post-season break for a while - either way, if you're in that niche market of being super-entertained by the antics of a ghost-whispering middle schooler and his antics on and around the Go board, prepare to be disappointed. Before the hiatus, however, enjoy these four episodes as Hikaru attempts to ace the rigorous Insei examination, trains diligently, and proudly makes it to the "A" leagues.

Idaten Jump
(Cartoon Network)
-Thursday May 3 6:00am - Episode 23 "Breakthrough"
-Friday May 4 6:00am - Episode 24 "Return"

I am relieved - RELIEVED - that this marks the season finale of Idaten Jump, and therefore potentially the SERIES finale, which will no doubt help me sleep a little better at night. To think of all the positive things I could be doing instead of writing about an asinine kids' series involving spikey-haired striplings and their mountain bikes and their adventures. Instead, Global Warming still exists, Cancer still destroys the lives of millions, and Nicolas Cage is still allowed to act in movies.

Kino's Journey
(ImaginAsianTV)
-Monday April 30 9:30am - Episode 8 "Land of Wizards" (Repeats Tue May 1 5:30am)
-Tuesday May 1 9:30am - Episode 9 "Land of Books" (Repeats Wed May 2 5:30am)
-Wednesday May 2 9:30am - Episode 10 "A Tale of Mechanical Dolls" (Repeats Thu May 3 5:30am)
-Thursday May 3 9:30am - Episode 11 "Her Journey" (Repeats Fri May 4 5:30am)
-Friday May 4 9:30am - Episode 12 "A Peaceful Land" (Repeats Sat May 5 5:30am)

This is much like the anime equivalent to the film "The Motorcycle Diaries," except that the motorcycle talks, and I'm fairly certain that Kino doesn't instill a communist regime and isn't adorned on millions of T-shirts worn by hipsters everywhere. Kino's Journey involves a few pit stops to a land where agriculture rules all, except for one iconoclast; a battle against censorship; creepy dolls; a recap episode; and a place with a terrifying definition of "peace."

Kyoh Kara Maoh
(ImaginAsianTV)
Tuesday May 1 5:30pm - Episode 14 "Yuri, Doing Hard Labor" (Repeats Tue May 1 8:30pm, Wed May 2 1:00am, 12:30pm)

Have I made enough statements to the effect of "Kyoh Kara Maoh is almost literally a fangirl's wet dream"? Although it stops short of outright sodomy, the show goes pretty far than your average bishounen-fest in favor of fanservice. This week: Yuri, the protested "demon king," gets roped into yet another compromising situation as he's forced to backbreaking labor in penance for his misdeeds.

The Law of Ueki
(ImaginAsianTV)
Tuesday May 1 6:00pm - Episode 14 "The Law of the Awakening Organ" (Repeats Tue May 1 9:00pm, Wed May 2 1:30am, 1:00pm)

Ueki, in this remarkably regurgitated anime plot, fights one of the strongest of the Robert's Ten, is beaten, trains, and then fights again. To which he will probably train more afterwards. Then, more fighting. I'm assuming, of course.

MAR
(Cartoon Network)
Saturday April 28 10:30pm - Episode 8 "Phantom, the Undead Knight"

Ginta and his spritely gang, having just rescued THE Princess, regroups and dispenses much-needed backstory on the history of MAR and the ARMs and other jargon-y things.

Naruto
(Cartoon Network)
Saturday April 28 9:30pm - Episode 85 "Hate Among the Uchihas: The Last of the Clan"

That no-good rat-fink Itachi Uchiha continues his nastiness, as he bullies his younger brother Sasuke, causing the onlooking Naruto and Jiraiya to step in and call afoul his schoolyard shenanigans.

(YTV)
Friday May 5 8:00pm - Episode 79 "Beyond the Limits of Darkness and Light"

The glorious end of the "Chunin" arc of the series, this episode has Naruto soundly finishing his fight against Gaara, while the duelin' rooftop Hokages wrap things up as well.

NieA_7
(ImaginAsianTV)
Friday May 4 8:30am - Episode 1 "Alien and Launching UFO Bath" (Repeats Sat May 5 5:00am)

What a pleasant, albeit odd, surprise! Replacing Hikaru no Go during its ImaginAsianTV hiatus is Yoshitoshi aBE's, he of Serial Experiments Lain and Haibane Renmei fame, social satire and kooky alien comedy. The setup being that aliens have essentially crash-landed on Earth, and instead of being the hyper-advanced sentient beings from the movies, are relegated to a caste much lower than even the lowest-class of human beings. Enter the odd couple of NieA and Chigasaki, a low-class alien living with a down-on-her-luck, poor student and their misadventures. Why this is on at 8:30 in the morning is beyond me, but much like the similarly intelligent Kino's Journey, this is an engaging series that's great no matter the time of day.

One Piece
(Cartoon Network)
Saturday April 21 10:00pm - Episode 87 "Zolo vs. Mr. One"

Zolo, the erstwhile swordsman of the Straw-Hat Pirates who IN NO WAY RESEMBLES LEGENDARY SWORDSMAN "ZORRO" SO DON'T SUE OKAY, battles the terrible Mr. One, whose ability to transform into solid steel proves difficult for somebody who uses swords.

Samurai Champloo
(Razer)
Sunday April 29 9:30pm - Episode 19 "Unholy Union"

Despite the hilarious historical inaccuracies of using hip-hop in feudal Japan, even Samurai Champloo isn't afraid of using some actual "history" here and there, as this wonderful episode clearly demonstrates. Fuu, in her ever-vigilant quest to be reunited with the "Sunflower Samurai," encounters a persecuted flock of Christian followers.

Shin Chan
(Cartoon Network)
Tuesday May 1 12:30am - Episode 13 "Swimming, Diving and Scuba Team" (Repeats Tue May 1 4:00am)

I can't say that one could ever accuse Adult Swim of making sense, so it's hard for me to lambaste them for this. Shin Chan, I guess, is being aired in seven episode chunks, wherein those seven episodes are then re-aired, with the remaining seven episodes to be aired later, until they reach the full 20 episodes they had ordered. I'm sure there's some Da Vinci Code-esque numerology at play here.

Trigun
(G4TechTV Canada)
-Monday April 30 8:30pm - Episode 22 "Alternative"
-Tuesday May 1 8:30pm - Episode 23 "Paradise"
-Wednesday May 2 8:30pm - Episode 24 "Sin"
-Thursday May 3 8:30pm - Episode 25 "Live Through"
-Friday May 4 8:30pm - Episode 26 "Under the Sky So Blue"

Hey, fancy that - a conclusion to an anime series that is open ended, but not at all confusing or irritating! Trigun is a show that has numerous ups and downs, but certainly the wonderful finale is the series at its peak. I'm curious as to what other wonderful and heretofore overlooked catalog title Geneon has in stock for G4's less-retarded Canadian sibling.
