The Click
May 26 - June 1

by Brian Hanson,

Good evening or afternoon or whatever time you decide to read articles on the internet about anime on television! The Click is back and loaded to its proverbial brim with precious and lovingly crafted "content."

Of course, the big news in the world of all nerd-dom this week deals with the release of the new Pirates of the Caribbean movie. I hope you'll all forgive me for discussing something that is neither animated, from Japan, nor on television, but I've just returned home from a late-night screening of the latest installment, and feel I need to speak on a few things in a somewhat public place, where they really have no purpose being said. I do this mostly to make myself feel important, of course. Jack Sparrow is one of those rare, iconic movie characters, and is a wonderful creation in just about every way. He is this generation's Indiana Jones, for certain. Why, then, do his movies seem to sidetrack him as much as possible? Is it because common moviegoers actually want to watch Orlando Bloom do his Pouting Sad Face, followed by his Pouting Love Face? Or Keira Knightley's oh-so-adorable shrieking 12-year-old-girl voice in place of acting? Or about two-dozen ill-conceived plot twists in place of an actual story? I'm certain that if they took Pirates 2 and 3, cut each of them in half, and mooshed them together, there'd be a fun, entertaining movie there that would make a lot more sense. But then, of course, Jerry Bruckheimer would be out the guaranteed 600 million dollars another movie with "Pirates of the Caribbean" tacked to its title would make, so scratch that idea.

Now, back to anime! Which, though many of them may be as ridiculous and silly as Pirates 3, none of them are nearly three hours long, which is a definite improvement.

Seriously, no more trolling at the expense of Pirates 3. I'm done with it. I think.

Bleach
(Cartoon Network)
Sunday May 27 12:00am - Episode 35 (Repeats Sun May 27 3:00am)

This week's Click Pick hearkens back that old adage - what am *I* looking forward to watching most this week? That would easily be this week's Bleach premiere, wherein a sudden and mysterious death amongst the ranks of the Soul Society elite causes all manner of uproar, which spells trouble for our friends Ichigo and co. - being that they are the ones blamed for the supposed murder.

Eureka 7
(YTV)
Friday June 1 11:00pm - Episode 27 "Helter Skelter" (Repeats Sat June 2 2:30am)

YTV viewers, rejoice! Major, major props to my man Jesse Betteridge for the juicy info that, yes, Eureka 7's new season begins on YTV this week, as well as many other tidbits of information that pertains to our Canadian contingent. And it just so happens that this is a very, very good episode, too, featuring Charles and Ray infiltrating the Gekko, while a clueless Renton remains locked in the brig.

PREMIERES:

Basilisk
(Independent Film Channel)
Friday June 1 11:30pm - Episode 22 "The Haunted" (Repeats Sat June 2 2:45am)

Yet more jilted ninja cross-clan love feuds this week, as the dark and foreboding milieu of Basilisk forebodes the foreboding tale of Oboro, who tries to lure her would-be lover Gennosuke with the aid of a captive.

Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad
(MuchMusic)
-Monday May 28 12:00am - Episode 23 "Festival" (Repeats Tue May 29 7:00pm, Wed May 30 12:00am, 4:00pm)
-Tuesday May 28 12:30am - Episode 24 "Third Stage" (Repeats Tue May 29 7:30pm, Wed May 30 12:30am, 4:30pm)

Beck reaches it's seemingly penultimate conclusion, as the band readies for the Grateful Sound Music Festival, but a myriad of personal problems, behind-the-scenes deals, and tempered egos threatens to destroy the band before they even have the chance to shine. Pathos, bathos, and rockin' out!

Bleach
(YTV)
Friday June 1 10:30pm - Episode TBA (Repeats Sat June 2 2:00am)

Eureka 7 is returning to YTV with new episodes, and according to my Canuck homeslice Jesse Betteridge, Bleach is likely to follow suit - but no guarantees here, folks, so be wary. Remember to wear your repeat-proof protective gear as a precaution.

Blood+
(Cartoon Network)
Sunday May 27 12:30am - Episode 11 "After the Dance" (Repeats Sun May 27 3:30am)

The Phantom continues to stalk the erstwhile vampire-killin' Saya, which spells trouble for the student body as the worst possible time for a vicious, child-abducting stalker to appear would be during the annual formal ball! Think of all the ruined dates! Those poor, fictional animated schoolchildren!

Bobobo-bo Bo-Bobo
(Cartoon Network)
Saturday May 26 8:30pm - Episode 60 "Blowing Your Savings on Bubbles: Is It Worth It?"

Bo-Bobo and friends team up to fight bodily hairs, comb, Sharpie Marker, bowling trophy, discarded Q-tips surrounding assorted computer cables and Popsicle sticks.

Cowboy Bebop
(Razer)
Sunday May 27 9:00pm - Episode 23 "Brain Scratch"

The most cerebral episode of Bebop, both literally and figuratively, centers on a mysterious cult known as Scratch, and the helpless souls who become entangled in their web. Which now includes a desperate-to-escape-her-debts Faye Valentine. Expect lots of technobabble and philosophical gobbledygook!

Elemental Gelade
(ImaginAsianTV)
Tuesday May 29 5:00pm - Episode 18 "The False React" (Repeats Tue May 29 8:00pm, Wed May 30 12:30am, 12:00pm)

With a brand new ally in tow, the spunky Viro, our heroes continue their journey to escape the evil clutches of the sky pirates after their heads. Must... avoid... discussing... dissatisfaction... with... Pirates of the Caribbean...

Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo
(ImaginAsianTV)
Tuesday May 29 6:30pm - Episode 18 "Duel" (Repeats Tue May 29 9:30pm, Wed May 30 2:00am, 1:30pm)

The noble Albert, fed up with the Count's constant jibba-jabba, duels with him, and in the process lots of juicy, spoiler-ific details spring forth, like a bounteous geyser.

Gundam SEED Destiny
(YTV)
Friday June 1 9:30pm - Episode 13 "Revived Wings" (Repeats Sat June 2 1:30am)

Jumpin' Jehosephat, how many acronyms can one show have? I know SEED stands for something, and then there's MINERVA and ZAFT and lots of stuff like EA and... despite my love for acronyms in their myriad of forms, even I think this is a bit crazy. Anyway, all of those acronyms come up in this week's Gundam SEED Destiny, in Canada! New and old allies return to heed the call of battle, including one Kira Yamato, heretofore forgotten protagonist of the first Gundam SEED series.

Human Crossing
(ImaginAsianTV)
-Friday June 1 5:30am - Episode 9 "Smile"
-Friday June 1 9:30am - Episode 10 "Street" (Repeats Sat June 2 5:30am)

What gives with the scheduling on this show? It isn't as though it's early-morning timeslot wasn't enough to practically doom it to obscurity - I would think the meager, albeit sincere, promotion I could proffer it would be appreciated. Anyway, catch these episodes of Human Crossing, and enjoy a slow-paced but interestingly deep show focusing on the crazy lives of ordinary people! Yeah!

Kyo Kara Maoh
(ImaginAsianTV)
Tuesday May 29 5:30pm - Episode 18 "For That Love" (Repeats Tue May 29 8:30pm, Wed May 30 1:00am, 12:30pm)

Yuri, that beleaguered demonic deity, has made a royal decree - Wolfram, his bratty compatriot, needs his own room. Then there are monsters and drama and such.

The Law of Ueki
(ImaginAsianTV)
Tuesday May 29 6:00pm - Episode 18 "The Law of Dogura Mansion" (Repeats Tue May 29 9:00pm, Wed May 30 1:30am, 1:00pm)

An invitation to a "party" given to Ueki and his band of rough-trigger troublemakers, of course, leads to more fighting. Ueki goes up against the newest member of the Robert's Ten, and there are shoutings of attack names and such.

Lupin III
(G4TechTV)
-Monday May 28 8:30pm - Episode 16 "Sheik-Down"
-Tuesday May 29 8:30pm - Episode 17 "My Birthday Pursuit"
-Wednesday May 30 8:30pm - Episode 18 "A Safe Bet"
-Thursday May 31 8:30pm - Episode 19 "Hell Toupee"
-Friday June 1 8:30pm - Episode 20 "Last Mastery"

Oy gevalt! How do I keep missing these things? Canada, you, as a nation, have an obligation to watch Lupin III as much and as earnestly as possible. It is an honestly funny, engaging, and charming show, with delectable old-school animation infused with hip new-school humor. This week's batch of thievery and lechery includes Lupin outsmarting a would-be Lawrence of Arabia, a Pink Panther-esque diamond, Neo-Nazis, and an old samurai friend of his stalwart swordsman companion, Goemon.

MAR
(Cartoon Network)
Saturday May 26 10:00pm - Episode 11 "Babbo: Version 2"

Spikey-haired kid Ginta's magical weapon, an anthropomorphic, mustachioed "ARM" named Babbo, becomes new and improved! But will it actually be "new" and "improved," unlike so many Dorito's bags that have made that same claim? Find out!

(YTV)
Friday June 1 7:00pm - Episode 1 "Open! Door to Another World"

YTV adds the trans-dimensional kookiness of MAR to its Friday-night hit parade, to the shrieking joy of no doubt millions. Maybe. Watch as Ginta enters the crazy fantasy land of MAR, for the first time ever!

Naruto
(Cartoon Network)
Saturday May 26 9:00pm - Episode 89 "An Impossible Choice: The Pain Within Tsunade's Heart"

This week's Naruto introduces the disconcertingly buxom Tsunade, one of the former "Legendary Sannin" that has now taken to gambling her life away in ignominy. That is, until Naruto and his dirty-minded teacher attempt to sway her help - unless the nefarious Orochimaru gets to her first.

(YTV)
Friday June 1 8:00pm - Episode 83 "Jiraiya: Naruto's Potential Disaster"

Naruto learns some important Ninja history courtesy of Jiraiya, while Sasuke searches for Naruto, in order to warn him of the impending danger caused by Itachi and his secret society. If I could think of any good "Ninja vs. Pirate" jokes, they would go here, probably. Too bad there aren't any.

One Piece
(Cartoon Network)
Saturday May 26 9:30pm - Episode 91 "The Crypt Script"

Even for a lame pun, that title doesn't make any sense. Especially considering the content of the episode, which features neither crypts nor scripts. Instead it features villain extraordinaire Crocodile, betraying his right-hand woman, Nico Robin, while Luffy follows in hot pursuit and the rest of the crew attempt to defuse a bomb that threatens to destroy the kingdom.

The Prince of Tennis
(Cartoon Network)
Saturday May 26 10:30pm - Episode 10 "Counterattack! Sasabe Again"

This week, Ryoma squares off in Mortal Tennis Kombat against a man with probably the greatest nickname ever - the "Golden Retriever," so named because he "retrieves" nearly any ball in the court. Clever, no?

Samurai Champloo
(Razer)
Sunday May 27 9:30pm - Episode 23 "Baseball Blues"

Sigh, if only every episode of Prince of Tennis were as much unadulterated fun as this stand-alone Champloo episode. Our traveling trio encounters a ship of boorish Americans, and end up literally going to bat for a small village in a game of winner-takes-all baseball.

Yu-Gi-Oh! GX
(Cartoon Network)
Saturday May 26 7:30pm - Episode 110 "Primal Instinct"

When I was a kid, I really wanted the game "Primal Rage" for my Sega Genesis. It had dinosaurs, dinosaurs that fought and literally ripped out each others hearts and ate them, and could stomp on little cavemen. It seemed as though it were the greatest game ever crafted by human hands. I mowed the lawn and practically landscaped the backyard of this lady in the neighborhood, who probably could have saved herself the 80 dollars she paid me to simply do it herself, but she rather enjoyed screaming and yelling at a confused and exhausted 11-year old child, so I suppose that was worth it. Anyway, the game itself turned out to be a chunky, uncontrollable piece of detritus. After about an entire month of trying to figure out the game's unresponsive controls, I relented the game to my sister, who played it for about two days before burying it in the closet. The End.

...Oh, uh, and this week's Yu-Gi-Oh GX is about cards.

Zatch Bell
(YTV)
Friday June 1 8:30pm - Episode 71 "The Roar of Rao Diboren!"

The gang's all here, as Zatch and Kiyo's esteemed fighting partners all join their quest to destroy the nefarious Zofis, and they all fight and such.

MOVIES/SPECIALS

Howl's Moving Castle
(Starz Edge)
Saturday May 26 6:00am (Repeats Sat May 26 7:00pm)

Any Studio Ghibli is always a welcome addition to the lineup. Though I, and I suspect many of you, already own this fine film on DVD, so I'm afraid that's how I'll end up watching it if I do indeed watch it this week.

Pokemon: Lucario and the Mystery of Mew
(Cartoon Network)
Monday May 28 10:00am

Look, kids! Pokemon! I'll bet in this feature film they Pokemon all over the place, Pokemonning in ways never witnessed before by human eyes! Or something!

Dead Leaves
(Encore Action)
Friday June 1 9:30am

In case you've missed this head-trip of a 60 minute feature before: this film features a character who has a drill in place for a rather unpleasant part of his anatomy.

And that's it, guys. Be sure to check out next week, when I thinly disguise myself as an anime columnist to talk about movies, such as why all movies that have ever won Academy Awards are actually terrible, and how any movie that makes more than 100 thousand dollars is a piece of crap you should be ashamed for enjoying!
