TheGotank's Anime

Favorite Opening Songs Rating Comment
Bokurano (TV) "Uninstall" is great. Chorus is excellent IMO. Too bad the full song didn't add much more to the TV version...
ef: a tale of melodies (TV) Excellent "Ebullient Future"; Tenmon's genius strikes again! The main melody is simple, yet immensely powerful. Otherwise, this song is much like Euphoric Field, but slightly inferior in the interlude part, remedied with a superior main theme. The opening animation sequence accompanying this song is definitely one of the best and most unique in anime, especially with the subtle differences it incurs in various episodes, reflecting the mood of the episode. And on a second note, Elisa's English singing still sounds very natural, but is even more difficult to discern the lyrics this time around.
ef: a tale of memories (TV) Masterpiece "Euphoric Field" is excellent. Nice instrumentation, and the solos that are added to the full version are even more amazing to the level of being tear inducing. The second pass through the chorus is terrific, especially when the electric guitar comes in... Ahh Tenmon...
Fafner (TV) "Shangri-La" has arguably one of the best transitions into chorus in all anime songs I've heard. Angela's voice is exploited to its full potential. Great chord progressions give the song a distinctly 'epic sadness' sort of feel.
(The) Familiar of Zero: Knight of the Twin Moons (TV) Good "I Say Yes"; while I'm not particularly fond of the orchestration style (would go so much better with a classical style, like how Mitsumune Shinkichi did the remix), but the key changes are some of the best in all the songs I've heard, and adds a great 'sad' feel to the whole thing. The main chorus is awesome too.
Fate/stay night (TV) Very good "Disillusion"; what can I say? Powerful chorus, amazing sax solo in the middle, and fantastic ending where the sax is integrated into the rest of the instruments.
Full Metal Panic! (TV) "Tomorrow"; A somewhat typical anime song that does everything very well, but without much innovation.
Full Metal Panic! The Second Raid (TV) "Minami Kaze"; Particularly good chorus makes this song fairly memorable.
Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu (TV) "Sore Ga, Ai Desho?"; Again, sort of like "Tomorrow", but after the initial entrance into the chorus, the melody seems to be a little lacking in direction... Otherwise, it's quite good, especially the full version.
H2O ~Footprints in the Sand~ (TV) Excellent "Katayoku no Icarus" has excellent flute usage, and the melody overall is great.
Macross Frontier (TV) Good "Lion"; Amazing chorus and opening riff. The key change into the chorus is great too, and this is one of the few duet songs where the 'duet' part actually adds to the quality of the song, rather than just having it for sentimental reasons. The key change later on between repetitions of the chorus is simple, yet awesome. "Diamond Crevasse"; So unique, with a nostalgic and familiar melody that I can't seem to put my finger on... The melody change at 1:08 is especially interesting. Nice and sad overall.
Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha A's (TV) Very good "Eternal Blaze"; doesn't really stand out in any one regard, but the song as a whole is quite catchy and has a good enough melody. The electric guitar solo towards the end is really funky (the solo's last note comes down on an upbeat... lol).
Minami-ke (TV) "Keikenchi Joushouchuu"; great melody, the shouting stuff is ... cute... Nice key change too.
Negima!? (TV) "1000% SPARKING!" is awesome... Distinctly awesome melody, and hair raising (in a good way) electric guitar solo. The talking part in the middle is unique =p
Polyphonica (TV) "Apocrypha"; this song by Eufonius is definitely unique in more ways than one. From the seagull noises, the wacky (but not necessarily good) key changes, the great chorus, to the wonder full violoncello part (or maybe it's a bass) throughout the song, this is definitely memorable to say the least =)
Shakugan no Shana (TV) Very good "Hishoku no Sora"; definitely a classic. The non-standard orchestration with synthetic instruments in the background initially didn't leave too heavy an impression, but the melody definitely grows on me =)
Shakugan no Shana (movie) Very good "Akai Namida"; ahh... Such a nice song wasted on only a movie... Great piano intro, awesome melody throughout, and the song carries a incredibly 'sad' mood that's really fitting for what happened on-screen at the time.
Sister Princess (TV) "Love Destiny"; Great song with a great chorus and lovely vocalization by Yui Horie (definitely better when singing songs with more sullen melodies). The instrumentation is also quite pleasing. Unfortunately, there seems to be a rather low note that was sung off tune flat the first time across (the concert B at 1:06 of the full version), which is a fairly glaring flaw. The violin solo that happens towards the end of the full version is quite awesome, but it's a shame that the trill to finish the solo wasn't extended for a few extra beats...
Stellvia (TV) "Asu e no Brilliant Road"; The exceptional main melody in this song is complemented by Angela's unique singing style, with a bit of portamento added at the end of certain notes prior to large pitch jumps, which results in a very unique and intriguing feel. I'd say Angela is one of the only singers around that actually adds something new to a song she sings, rather than just playing out the role of the vocalist in the composer's grand scheme.
