I actually prefer stories where the characters are a bit messed up. The reason I bounced off A Sigh of Affection, even though it was a good show, was because the male lead was Mr. Perfect McWonderful, and I just find that kind of boring. But I also grew up on romance stories from the 90's and 2000's and boy oh boy, Hananoi is positively angelic compared to some of those era's romance leads.

Would be nice if the show looked better though.

I don't think everything about Hananoi is meant to come off as okay, I feel like they're slowly showing that he has abandoment and isolation issues that causes him to act out in relationships (because he feels he only has himself left to give) but that's ultimately why he needs someone like Hotaru who values him and his feelings rather than just what she wants.

And we've seen over the course of the last few episodes why she's fallen for him, from just being interested in his perspective and his idea of love to seeing all the effort he goes to for her sake and being so tender and caring towards her. It was gradual but it was there.

The Valentine's Day chapter, which was covered in this episode, was one of my early favorites in the manga. From my recollection, it should only go up from here in terms of the story.

IMO what AJ seems to be missing is that Hananoi is aware of his troubling behavior when it comes to relationships and he's trying to fix it, though he believes (as he said) that Hotaru deserves better than him. And this is coming from a viewer who hasn't read the manga yet.

Now I kind of want to see Hotaru grow her hair out to signify not only her truly falling in love but overcoming her trauma.

Yeah, he was probably at his most problematic in acting so possessive towards Hotaru but he acknowledged it. He just really has crippling anxiety and insecurity when it comes to people leaving him that shows especially when he's worried about his relationship with Hotaru.

He's also much more awkward and dorky than he tries to appear at first glance and that's more of the real Hananoi that Hotaru wants to better get to know.

Very enjoyable review this week -- I will admit, especially on retrospect, that the degree in which Hannanoi cuts off his interaction with Hotaru while giving her "space" is not great.

But as the episode concludes (and is mentioned further on in the review), the two of them decide to face the uncertainties and ups and downs of a relationship together, and I think this stride is where the series continues to shine. I'm excited for more, having mostly made peace with my qualms in the production quality.

I think this episode got more into the heart of the issues with Hananoi. The sense of abandonment he feels from his parents and the idea that they would choose other kids (for altruistic reasons, mind you) rather than him making him feel like no one would ever prioritize him until he learned of the idea of a soulmate which he latched onto.

And it's not that he isn't self-aware of how excessive he can be, but it's also partially a coping mechanism and a projection of his own insecurities. Like he could have easily just accepted Hotaru's confession but he wanted her to be consciously aware of what he feels are his faults in-case she decides to change her mind. And Hotaru realizes he's not really uncaring or apathetic towards others, it's just a front he puts up.

But that just makes them coming together at the end as a 100% mutual couple, with all their different ideas and perspectives on love and each other, all the more heartwarming. Even their first kiss! Kind of!
