And Spirited Away was one of Miyazaki's most mediocre films. That's what the Academy goes for: medicrity.

I'd disagree slightely.

I'm not going to get into the merits & flaws of the academy, but look it this way:

Miyazaki's previous, better films were never eligible for an Academy Award.

Although not as good as some of his other works, Spirited Away was the first one eligible and it won.

Edited for being way too nasty. Suffice it to say that if you don't like Spirited Away, you're wrong.

I don't think Gatsu's saying he doesn't like Spirited Away, he just think its over-rated compared to Miyazaki's older less known(by the masses) stuff.

I have a question. If Disney releases Porco Rosso in the theatre could it be up for an Oscar?

I think a movie can only be considered for an Oscar in the year of its release.

Not really. It has to play at specific venues for a specific amount of time - just one little private screening won't suffice.

Aaron: Not liking Spirited Away was one of the few times I could agree with Chris Beveridge. In essence, Spirited Away was a series of short stories created to make one larger movie. I think what I enjoyed about Totoro was that it was his own creation, and yet was still uniquely Japanese. Spirited Away relied on authentic Japanese cultural elements, and so disappointed in terms of actual creativity. Plus I really didn't know enough about Chihiro to care about her. A good back-story would've sufficed.

No, it's about a decade beyond the Academy's one-year leeway for films released in foreign markets before the American release.

Looks like Tokyo Godfathers isn't the only anime which might have a chance of getting nominated. http://www.jaggedteam.com/bin/shownews.cgi?id=3192

Well.....everybody seems to forget that the academy added the category of best animated feature to the list of awards just a couple of years ago. So most of his older films or anime for that matter never had a chance to be eligible for an oscar before up until recently. Spirited away was one of the best films that could be eligible for an oscar at the time, so complaining about his older works being better award winners than spirited away is useless cause they never had a chance to be eligible in the first place.

Couldn't they get around the Ghibli movies' ages by just releasing them dubbed in theaters?
