If you weren't there for the live broadcast last night, I highly recommend trying to attend a future one, simply for the visual livestream of adorable kitty Boston. Very Happy

Kabaneri is definitely different but it's already lost it's charm and is not looking to be anything special or really memorable in the end.

"Charm" is such a subjective term. I think it still has plenty of that. Depends on your tastes.

That said, in my opinion...a show can still be memorable even without being super special.

I'm still liking Kabaneri a lot. So, far I have gotten what I wanted out of it and that is action movie level of excitement. I actually have Amazon Prime and I've been following Noitamina anime for a while now. So, I was on top of this. But my other friends who don't watch things as closely, and tend to watch on less than official sites, this show just picked up a lot of steam (haha, I'm terrible) with them and now everyone is talking about it.

Thank you for another show!
On the matter of the streaming rights to Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress, I have this to say. Should regional restrictions for major territories be slowly removed, which may or may not be occurring, perhaps the fragmented distribution of major anime properties will become the next bête noire that keeps piracy hot on the heels of streaming distributors. Amazon can certainly withstand any counterfactual loss of sales, but such a state of affairs is hardly a harmonious or desirable one.

Accursed time zones! Due to variations in daylight savings arrangements, there are sadly only two weeks in the year in which staying up for ANNCast is plausible for me.

You guys only spent a minute on the question about Anime Expo changing its "background checks for everybody" policy, since they've sensibly backed away from it for everyone but their own employees and volunteers. But I did think this was interesting: a post on the Muv-Luv forums suggests Degica had been unwilling or unable to set up an appearance by any of the Muv-Luv people because of the policy:
Quote:
Just to note we haven't confirmed the presence of any Muv-Luv creators or artists. :)

Main reason being SPJA's Youth Policy Program would've required us to do bg checks and jump through all sorts of hoops. But seeing as the SPJA has updated said program we are looking into arranging things. It's sadly rather short notice.

Just hope for the best!

This solidly backs up the points that Chris (ANN's publisher) made in his editorial that "some of AX's potential guests have pulled out because of this [policy]."

I don't know if it was mentioned but one of the thing that annoys me in Kabaneri is how none of the characters have even questioned how Ikoma survived the virus or ask him to demonstrate it. I mean isn't it supposed to be a big deal how one of the human managed to find a way to stop the virus? If so, then why aren't any of the side characters or Ikoma bringing it up in these past 6 episodes?

I think the question about the KyoAni awards was misunderstood, since everyone in the panel kept saying "anime awards" and that "it's not a public vote". For starters the thing that causes controversy is KyoAni's Novel award and secondly, what some people question is not who wins -at least I don't see anyone here in the forums saying x or y should've won or demanding that KyoAni makes these awards a People's choice-, but rather the fact that no one does. This discussion arises every year when the award recipients -or lack thereof, more often- are revealed, because many seem to believe KyoAni is just scamming young creators to get their intellectual property so they can make a high-selling otaku anime out of it, without giving them the prize money they should be due. While I personally don't think it's intended to be a scam, I do have to question the point of holding the awards if they continue to receive only submissions that aren't up to their standard. Lack of grand prize winners also seems like something that would discourage possible talents from sending in their work

Remember the paranoia that was going on? For the majority of the past episodes the people weren't even accepting Ikoma or Mumei and were trying to actively get rid of them. So they weren't really predisposed to asking how he did this they were just labeling him as a Kabane. Mumei has also suggested more than once that spoiler[maybe they haven't survived it, but maybe only delayed it. As many of her companions have succumbed to it and she made light that she could wake up one day as a Kabane. Its kind of like Claymore being stuck in a half-awakened form.] Also this latest episode has introduced her spoiler["brother" which may bring up next episode the backstory of how she became a Kabeneri] and may go into more detail about the virus that you are looking for.

When I first started watching Kabaneri it gave me a vibe very similar to its cousin Attack on Titan. But I feel and think that with each episode Kabaneri is becoming its own thing. I agree that Kabaneri is more about being a cool action show and a visual spectacle, but the writing in the last few episodes have been strong, and I am staring to really care about the characters.

I also think that Kabaneri must be fairly popular in North America. I agree that Kabaneri being hidden in Prime is inconvenient, but I hope Amazon does the smart thing by commissioning an English dub and releasing it on BD as soon as they can. I am sure they could even put it on Toonami.

And thanks CrowLia for doing a great job addressing what the actual controversy with the Kyoto Animation Awards is.

That would be nice. Kabaneri seems like the sort of thing that would fit in well there, but there might be licensing issues, depending on the exact terms of Amazon's exclusivity.

Kabaneri would definitely work better as a movie. Action without any characters to latch on to can only take me so far. The action scenes are nice, but I have no emotional investment in these characters which makes the action pretty unexciting. The biggest failing is the supporting cast which is filled with a bunch of one-note characters.

I wish that Amazon was at least selling the episodes individually like they do with the other stuff. Just that tiny little ray of light for the show. I don't think it would have stopped the piracy but maybe it would have helped get the show out there. Here's hoping it will be offered outside of Prime someday.
