Wow that's good numbers. I'm sure that's going to picked up here. NYICFF is already working on the schedule for 2017, I'll be shocked if they can get this feature for their line up. So I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Seems like the Anime film market has generally expanded pretty astronomically in the last couple of years. Things like A Silent Voice, Girls Und Panzer, and Your Name. seem like things that would have done a pretty great 10-15 million just a few years ago, but they are going well beyond that. I wonder how much money Rebellion would have made had it come out now. I honestly think it would be a bit higher. Not a ton higher maybe, since it's a sequel film, but probably a few million more, in my opinion. Really love seeing this market open up so much. I guess maybe it really is a case of that anime movie audience needing something to fill the void of Ghibli. I'm sure that's simplifying it too much, but anyway, it might be a factor. At least for Your Name. and A Silent Voice.

As a Madoka fan, this hurt a little bit. But at the some time I hope this isn't just a by product of inflation and more of sign that anime films are little by little becoming more popular in Japanese. While the stigma against late night TV anime will probably never go away in Japan, hopefully films like this will be more accepted and popular with the general public. Silent Voice is a story that has core message that resonates well beyond just anime fans.
