Goku looks like Mr. Popo took over Goku's body. Anyway, I hope Jump have a different cover because that one look pretty bad.

Nope, these are drawn by Jump's most popular series's mangakas (Oda, Horikoshi, Tabata, and Furudate) and they got to draw their character alongside their favourite Jump character from another series. There is also a back cover and don't worry, Ichigo and Yugi are on it.

no they've been promoting Bleach heavily recently because of the live action movie, and Kubo's one shot came out, on that note I have nothing against Oda but yikes that Luffy face on Goku, I cannot unsee

Actually guys, there's a back cover to the issue with a lot more characters, and from what I can remember, Ichigo, Yugi and Gintoki are all on there.

Hiei is probably Yuuki Tabata's favorite character in Yu yu Hakusho, I don't think there's a rule about the character needing to be the protagonist

Well that I didn't know. I just would figure that a mangaka would like the protagonist the best given the story they are writing is about the protagonist.

It's common for the protagonist of a series to not be one of the most popular characters; supporting cast tend to have more "freedom" & personality, while the lead has to stick to the themes of the story. Hell, Kinnikuman Nisei (a.k.a. Ultimate Muscle) constantly had main character Mantaro Kinniku (a.k.a. Kid Muscle) rank far from even the Top 10, and Yudetamago would always portray Mantaro as being pitifully desperate to beg fans to rank him higher next time.

Yep. The spread of different series showcased is actually pretty cool, and I even had to go google surfing for a bit to figure out some of them. The pair-ups went like this:

Alice & Taiyo + Slam Dunk
Invade You! + Neuro: Supernatural Detective
Momiji no Kisetsu + Sket Dance
Seiji Tanaka: Secretary of the Managing President, General Time Industries + Bleach
Noah's Notes + Houshin Engi
Jujutsu Kaisen + Leader-den Takeshi
Act-Age + Yu-Gi-Oh!
Hinamaru Zumo + Ultimate Muscle
Food Wars! + Hikaru no Go

there seems to be a common misconception with that, these mangaka choose whatever character they wanted to pair their MC with, but I see people say shit like "Ichigo wouldn't be there if it weren't for the movie" or "Jump hates Kubo" all that shit
