The 93rd Academy Awards will allow digitally released movies to be eligible, provided the film was already planned for a theatrical release, and is made available for streaming in the Academy Screening Room for Academy members within 60 days of the film's digital release. The Academy Awards typically only allow films that have at least a seven-day theatrical run within Los Angeles County to be eligible for the awards.

This should just be removed all together. It's so archaic. I can understand requiring a movie being available as of a specific date but not at a specific location - not when digital is so huge now. Just makes no sense to exclude digital.

They really should just drop the theatrical requirement entirely but then, they are pretty heavily out of touch.

Or maybe it's time for the Academy Awards or any awards show to be retired altogether. Filmmaking is an art, and for the most part in Hollywood, a business. It shouldn't even be a competition.

Not really — the digital rent is still not giving enough to compensate what traditional theaters does.

And AMC here act childish for sure — cinema production can live without AMC (and AMC isn't the whole traditional theater industry), AMC though cannot live without the cinema production companies. Especially with having billions USD of debts and one step near being bankrupt.

This really only affects a handful of movies so far, most notably Trolls World Tour. Although it did open in theaters in Russia. Most of the big titles are being held back.

I think AMC was planning to launch it's own streaming service which would explain why they're so upset. And the theaters may not be able to re-open for month yet, if at all this year. And even if they do, they're going to have to operate at reduced capacity and likely deal with reduced attendance.
Also, if other movie companies stand with Universal, then AMC won't be able to do anything. Movie theaters have been dying for some time now.
