It's worth mentioning, that MGS 1&2 are just re-releases of crap PC ports released back then.

Is Konami hurting for money? I have a hard time believing they're doing this for the goodness of their hearts...

I doubt they're "hurting", but they probably saw it as easy money.

I really need to get a controller for PC gaming... I don't see keyboard controls working well with some of these.

It may be worth noting that, since this is Good Old Games releasing these games on their platform Konami's involvement is likely limited to giving GoG the rights to release them on that platform.

GoG typically takes these older games and makes them playable on current hardware, often using DOSBox and doing the tweaking for each individual game. Konami likely did nothing involving making these games work on current PCs.

Frankly, I'd love to see GoG get the rights to publish Starlancer and Crimson Skies (the other two games I have in a set MS published in 2002 along with MGS) and tweak them to work on current systems.

While mostly accurate, it's a little more complicated than that - some fixes have been applied to these releases to make them work better in some ways than their original releases to PC, but yeah... these games really needed new ports for PC that we're unfortunately not likely to get.

Why not release the Castlevania games on the Switch Online?

Because Konami knows it can make way more money with people buying the literal Castlevania Anniversary Collection that's already on the Switch? Same with Contra. This is also likely why Square-Enix hasn't put any of its game on the NES & SNES services, as it likely feels that it wouldn't bring in enough money in royalties.

If we're being fair they wouldn't really need to considering you can already play it via emulation.
