Well, that's cool. Personally I respect that they are well written and beautifully animated, but Oshii's GITS is way to artsy for me. I am a fan of the manga, SAC, even arise(though it has problems), but when I finally finished the original movie it just felt underwhelming. It focused so much one atmosphere and tone that I really didn't feel connected to the characters like inbother series. Can someone tell me if I ask missing something?

When I watched it back in the 90s I did not appreciate it at ALL, I was definitely hoping for something more story-based. But the more I watch this film and the older I get, the more I like it. You’re correct, it’s mostly about the atmosphere (in my opinion) and reminds me of Macross Plus and the X/1999 movie. Mid-90s anime was preoccupied with looking fancy and exploring how technology impacts our lives, and less so with explicit plot.

Its the kind of film where if you only knew the knewer GITS stuff you may not appreciate it as it doesnt have same "feel" in a sense.
I own this and sequel innocence and still love them.

I wonder how the fans of the original manga felt. Considering the movie is very different.

I read the manga several times before I had a chance to see the movie. The movie is not all that different from the manga. This is remarkable since Shirow has stated that he gave Oshii free rein to do what he wanted.
The major difference is the character design for the Major. The manga was episodic with an underlying plot. The movie strips off the extra side plots and directly follows the main theme. Much of the dialog is directly quoted from the manga. I enjoyed the movie immensely as it added new dimensions to the manga.
The follow-up movie Innocence is, on the other hand, almost completely mood and visual fireworks. It is based thinly on one of the side plots from the original manga.

I've only seen it once, but it was recent enough that its 50/50 reputation had preceded it, and I was really surprised at how much I liked it.

I wasn't trying to suggest that it is bad. It is, however, quite "different". If you go into it expecting an expanded episode of SAC you will be disappointed.

Anyone heard anything on when tickets are going on sale in the US? Fathom Events doesn't have anything on their web site yet.

The IMAX website now has listings, and at least the AMC in NYC has times up as of last night, but you can't buy tickets just yet.
