Glad to hear The Girl who Leapt through Time won an award but surprised that Paprika didn't. Just saw Paprika on Saturday and it was fabulous! Definitely very thought provoking. Not sure which movie I prefer though, they were both very good.

That's great. Toki wa Kakeru shoujo is a truly great movie. It deserved the award.

Maybe The Girl Who Leapt Through Time got over Paprika because the poewrs that be expected another great from Kon and got a shocker from Hosoda? Or perhaps I'm pulling it out of my arse.
That would be the greatest anime news for R1 this year. Well, that or an announcement of Mind Game, Pale Cocoon, or Denno Coil getting licensed (by someone other than BV USA as I desperately want the series to get viewed as much as possible over here). It's entirely possible that Kadokawa's U.S. branch will license it and give it to someone else. |

Meh, I thought TokiKake was a legitimately better film than Paprika, personally. I'm all about empathetic characters and Paprika was a wee bit too bogged down in the middle by plot progression and expository monologues for my taste; it felt too unnatural. They're still both great films, though, and recognition for either of them is reason for celebration. |

I think there both great films it really comes down to taste. I thought that Paprika was better then Tokikake they both had there issues with Paprika development issue and Tokikake questionable plot holes. There both worth your time and money but do you want psychological thriller or do you want a slice life/romance story. |

I dunno, TokiKake made it simple enough that you couldn't poke too many... Well, that and anything involving time travel sort of has problems to begin with (except Tokikake's time travel seems to involve the person jumping back to a certain moment as opposed to physically going there *meaning that... uh... you can't meet yourself? What?*)... ... Yeah, there was that one episode of Invader Zim where Gir just put it all in perspective. Also, I liked Paprika since it was fun to watch and the ideas were really interesting; no one necessarily demonstrates this huge growth (with the exception of Chiba's thing in the end), but it was cool. Wait, where's the thread where I get to talk about it? I had this huge post and this is the only place where it didn't go up. |

I feel the same, but I was taking a guess at why one would get chosen over the other by way of more than one individual.
I'm suddenly reminded of why I will never, ever rate the original Ghost in the Shell film a "Masterpiece." 
Development issues and plot holes (plural)? Bwuh?
How about both? I can speak for myself and perhaps Cloe as well when I saw we're the types who can enjoy just about any genre of story so as long as its good (in our eyes). A lot of folks are like that, even if they are in the minority when it comes to entertainment. It is also possible to create an emotionally-charged "psychological" story. Madhouse released two series, one in 2003 and another in 2004, that capture that aspect perfectly. (Those familiar with my fanatacism should know which two series I speak of.)
I'm guessin' that the issue is spoiler[what happened later in the film, with Makoto being granted the opportunity to jump back in time... one more time. I kind of have an idea as to why that happened (other than some writing it off as a simple deus ex machina), but I wouldn't mind some kind of ultra in-depth explanation... eh, DKL?] Thread for the movie, maybe?

Well, I was under the impression that [in Tokikake]:
spoiler[Makoto got another chance since Chiaki re-did things in a way where his last phone call didn’t actually happen *since he went back and was busy stealing Makoto's bike* (I mean, it was shortly before the incident, so it [phone call scene] probably got overwritten or something). Only reason why she didn’t realize it until later was because she just assumed that she was out of charges (because Chiaki had to go back himself and use his last charge). I don’t think it was meant to be super complicated or detailed (aside from the fact that the ladybug from the intro and earlier in the movie was what showed Makoto the way); I like that it was kept simple in order to make way for the emotional climax of the movie.] I think the movie gets a little confusing mainly because: spoiler[Time is actually viewed as flowing in one direction regardless of where the main object travelling would find itself... and, for the most part, we were following Makoto's flow the entire movie; technically, since Chiaki went back and re-did things, we weren't supposed to see the scene where Makoto uses her last charge and the scene where Kosuke and Kaho get their s*** ruined since, in Makoto's flow, it didn't happen.] But, I dunno… that’s how I understood it. But yeah... it's time-travel; there's always gonna be problems and confusion, so you'll just have to agree with the logic used. As for Paprika... yeah, a thread would be okay... but then, maybe I'll just stick it into the review thread? (my post was a mess anyway) |
