Not necessarily representative of the actual show since it's a pre animated trailer + they seemingly already have production issues. Classic Mappa.

Four months until the anime airs, and yet the trailer is still pre-animated, on top of having 7 Animation Directors credited for it... oof.

I can't wait. This was one of my favorite reads of recent times. The story got a little goose wild at the climax, but the character cast and the lore build up are so satisfying to experience. I can only imagine how hard it'll be for the anime only crowd to have to wait a week between viewings with all the confusing horseshit that gets laid out.

Is it just me or does it look like they're aiming a bit too high?

As someone who loves this manga, I can live with this cast, no problems with it... what I'm wary about is the visuals. namely that yet again, as is so often the case with MAPPA, it's just so... sharp and clean.

I mean, it doesn't look bad, but it really seems to be lacking a vision, something other than "let's slap some colors on the manga pages, and make it move reeeeeally smooth!" which may work with some titles, but not with this one. If there's an anime that should revel in looking "dirty" with all sorts of vague and muddled colors for dreamlike effects, distortions, exaggerations to convey dynamic movements, etc. it's this one! Anyone who's seen the manga knows that visuals are extremely important, the manga has a pretty unique and really fun look, and the creators of the anime should have had a vision of how to make that work in anime... but from this trailer it seems that yet again MAPPA is falling into the trap of thinking that crisp and smooth animation equals good and interesting animation. (As much as I don't like Trigger's shows, their approach to animation would have worked much better here. Or at least they could have given this to someone who also worked on Jujutsu kaisen, that one has its problems too, re: visuals, but at least it has a ton more personality.)

Oh well, I'll still be here watching it. I just hope that they're not trying to do it in a single cour, that would be a terrible injustice for the manga.

That's a top tier cast and the story looks really interesting.

wouldn't expect anything less from this crap studio.
no doubt this anime will also be full of crappy cgi.

...OK, so I'm not the world's biggest MAPPA fan (as I think is obvious from my post above) but did I miss something? Where's all this hate coming from? I thought they were supposed to be a fan favorite studio. (Oh, how fast fandom's winds change.)

It's the "mainstream effect" - the more popular something is, the more bound it is to get people who hate it (and very vocally so) just for the sake of being contrarians.

In the case of the comment above yours, it's someone who is clearly still salty about Attack on Titan and who probably never watched like, more than two MAPPA shows at max.

There's just been a slew of bad press about MAPPA. Namely, that, even compared to other animation studios, they pump out many, many more anime projects (even anime originals -- not just adaptations!) every season, have incredibly bad working conditions, and pay their animators extremely low even for an already low-paying industry.

Anyway, I think MAPPA, adaptation-wise, is a good fit for Jigokuraku, but having the unenviable reputation of being one of the worst studios to work for, in an industry full of studios with bad working conditions, is... not great.
