Is this a revival sign of magical school genre?

The novel series ranked #1 in the 2020 edition of Takarajimasha's Kono Light Novel ga Sugoi! (This Light Novel Is Amazing!) guidebook.

Is this a testament of quality?

As a fan of the light novels, let's just say that this series is the closest you'll get to a Harry Potter anime lol.

And before anyone asks "Why are there only six characters when it says 'Seven Spellblades'?", the Spellblades don't actually refer to the characters.

Would you say the light novels are good? I was thinking of giving this a try but honestly it kind of came off as generic to me but I’ve heard people compare it to Harry Potter which I’m a fan of so that peaked my interest in giving the books a try.

I read the first LN volume of this and overall found it a pleasant surprise. I do feel that Spellblades is its own solid enough take on the magical school genre, but also feel that if everyone is going to say "it's light novel Harry Potter" then let me suggest you all at least tack on "as written by a Fate fan" to the end. =P

That said, the cast of characters for this one is good, but what I perhaps liked most was the story's blend of tones. You'll have a scene of intriguing fantasy world-building, then a scene much darker and more violent than you expected, and then a scene from out of left field that's so bizarre it's legitimately funny. If the anime can hone in on this contrast effectively we could have a real winner on our hands. The trailer here actually looked pretty nice, but it's hard not to be skeptical when it comes to the quality of LN anime adaptations. Hoping for the best for this, Apothecary Diaries, and My Happy Marriage.

Reader of the LN here too up to the current latest, compared to others LN from "magical school action" genre, this one is by no means generic, it does have its high and low and might be too macabre for some but that's also where this serie standout, students getting chopped, minced, flattened by others students or teachers is normal occurrence in this academy, only the strongest and the maddest ones can survive until the seventh year at Kimberly Magic Academy, actually while there is a plot and reason for the protagonist to entered Kimberly, their survival and learning at the academy are the most interesting things here.

Aerodynamic41 said it above and i remember saying something similar in the past but this is the closest to Harry Potter written by a japanese author.

The production values look surprisingly solid.

That's a certainly a.... unique choice for a director, I must say. The guy is mostly credited for directing openings and occasionally episodes.

Fingers crossed. I listened to the Japanese audiobooks on a whim and liked them a lot more than I expected to.

In some ways it seems weird to make the Harry Potter comparison when the magical school subgenre of LNs is so crowded and has been for so long, but a lot of elements in Spellblades really do feel like direct responses to Harry Potter.
