I've been interested in this title ever since it first started floating around, and I'm glad I finally picked it up. I'm a sucker for stories where the alien/robot/monster/other learns what it is to be human. Make it gay and you got me hooked like a kid to his morning cartoons.

Also, considering how straightforward the main characters are when it comes to talking about their romantic feelings for each other, I'd say the queer subtext is pretty much text. I am curious about something though:

Could potentially shy away from queer subtext in future volumes

Was there a reason in particular why you said this? I didn't see any signs that that might happen, but maybe I missed something.

Not really a spoiler, but I can at least guarantee it's plenty gay in volume 2. I have heard it was toned down a bit from its original form, though; the artist was posting drawings online for a little while before it got picked up for publication, and presumably to make it "fit" the magazine better some of the more overtly romantic aspects of the premise got left out. Given the, as you mentioned, blatant metaphor for sexual experimentation, I can only wonder what it was originally like.

it keeps up all the good stuff for the whole 3 volumes that are already out, and beyond.
it's a real gem of a manga.

Yeah I was tilting my head thinking if I was overthinking the gay when I read this because when I checked it out months ago it was definitely not subtext but like another commenter said maybe a lot of the blatant stuff was in volume 2. I definitely will pick up the English release when I’m back in America. I’m so sad I missed it but I’ll just have to wait to read the official translation later. But I definitely recommend people pick this up. It’s eerie and the boys’ relationship is interesting especially on the side of “Hikaru”.

Minus the BL elements, the premise of this reminds me a lot of Summertime Rendering. The dead childhood friend who comes back as Something Else that has all of the real person's memories, the sense of dread at a malevolent "other" infiltrating a community. It's great stuff when done right.
