CLAMP was my formal introduction to queerness and a huge influence on my life. Gravitation and LOVELESS, too. And let's not get into the multiple Nitro+ eroge I've read. I'm not an avid reader of BL or Yaoi, but it exists alongside GL/Yuri and other queer-centered manga and anime as an occasional indulgence for me. I enjoy reading romance in general and the gender/sex of the characters was never a turnoff for me, even if I didn't share in that trait myself (I'm a late-blooming trans lesbian who only has a distant attraction to anime guysーI can't find the same appeal for real guys, and I don't know why).
Oh, but Dick Fight Island deserves a mention. I don't usually like drastic localization name changes, but its notorious English-exclusive name was pure marketing genius and it got me to pick it up. It's totally my kind of weird. Now I own a small collection of manga with the BL label and I proudly display them on my bookshelf. Lol |

My introduction to BL had to be Loveless. Yet nowadays I've graduated into the danmei, the Chinese version of BL as well, yet it's rarely talked about especially with Heaven Official's Blessing season 2 coming.

I don't even remember what the first BL I watched was, but I was definitely into the genre after Ai No Kusabi. Then Junjou Romantica sealed the deal.
Even though the BL genre has improved over the years in some aspects (less non-con/ dub-con scenes) somehow the latest BL series feel very boring to me. There is a certain trend in what gets adapted nowadays, and it's mostly slice of life stories which consist of: Boy meets boy. They talk a bit. Then they fall in love. After a mild misunderstanding, they get together. They live happily ever after. The end. I understand that this type of stories are enjoyed greatly by people who long for this iyashikei type of normalcy in their love lives, and I totally respect that. But... where is the spice? Where is the hook of the premise? Where is the clashing characters and ideals? Something, anything resembling a plot maybe? Given was somehow set apart because it also dealt with music (even if the concept of BL in boy bands is nothing new) but besides that, the only really engaging BL story we had recently was Yuri on Ice. And that was in 2016. And perhaps it doesn't even classify as BL. Ah well. In the end we'll always have shounen series and fanfictions. Sometimes we don't even need the fanfictions. Can't wait to hear lines written right out of Shakespearean love stories coming from one shounen anime protagonist directed to his best friend/ rival other anime protagonist. |

I think the first and probably only real BL I ever watched was Weiss Kreuz or Gravitation, because my high school girlfriend at the time insisted on us watching it. She was also obsessed with Wolfs Rain but I don't think that was actually a BL she just liked shipping the characters. I doubt I would have ever watched any of those series if it wasn't for her. I did like the opening theme to Gravitation though.

While I was already familiar with the m/m shipping scene beforehand, I think the first actual BL series I watched was Gravitation. Which, well, doesn't exactly hold up today in some ways, but I still think the soundtrack has a lot of bangers. Banana Fish, Given and Go For It! Nakamura are others I'm fond of, and I still need to check out Classmates/Doukyuusei sometime.
I also agree that there's a place for both sweet, wholesome BL and spicier BL, and it would be nice if we got more variety in what gets adapted to anime. |

I honestly can't recall my introduction to either BL manga or anime (I vaguely recall a manga character in leopard print?), but I do remember my first favorites. For manga it was Seven Days and Aitsu no Daihonmei and for anime it was Ai no Kusabi (2012) and Kaze to Ki no Uta.
I think, had it come out today, Aitsu no Daihonmei would have had a strong chance for adaption because it's freaking hilarious. We don't really see a lot of dedicated comedy BL. Heck, there's still a dearth of any and all genres that aren't drama or slice-of-life. That's what I'd like to see change in the future for BL. |

Not trying to be a smartass or anything, but why would anyone watch BL who is not gay or queer etc.? Definitely not for everyone Nothing against those who want to enjoy the genre, but I wouldn't make such a clickbait title or claim when it is clearly a specific niche with a specific target audience like any other. Idk just saying.
