I thought Jujutsu Kaisen would be the surprise of the season but Frieren is also killing it.

Back in the day, it was extraordinarily rare for late-night shows to make these charts, outside noitaminA -- it was seeing Eden of the East on one of them that got me interested in watching it, way back in the day. Now we've got two at once.

Maybe it's related to the overall decline in ratings? Could be the otaku crowd is more resilient as a live audience than the broader public that watches things like Crayon Shin-chan or Conan.

So the biggest hit of the season is...Firefighter Daigo. A show western fans barely seem aware of, which didn't even get enough votes to have weekly reviews on here.

Really shows the disconnect between what's popular with otaku and what's actually popular by conventional standards.

It's actually quite fun, educational and overall very enjoyable, albeit a bit unrealistic. It's one of my most surprising shows of the season. Also looks like reddit lost interest in it within 3 weeks, typical.

That would be fully expected to anyone who follows ratings, the show that airs in the pre-Conan slot (Daigo, Mix, all BnHA seasons after s1, Kaito 1412, Time Bokan, Love All Play, among a few others I'm probably forgetting) is usually the biggest show in Japan. The one exception to this was Denpa Kyoushi, which was apparently so hated it negatively impacted even Conan's ratings.

A lot of western fans tend to be more into shonen/action type animes (I personally know people who refuse to watch an anime if there is no action). It is interesting though when you see the difference compared to Japan where you see more diversity in what’s popular. Funny thing is I was a big shonen fan back in the days (and I still like it) but I have gravitated a lot more into rom-com/slice of life anime’s as I’ve gotten older.

Pretty much, yeah. Shows in that timeslot always do well:

  • Spring 2024: My Hero Academia S7 (probably)
  • Fall 2023: Firefighter Daigo: Rescuer in Orange
  • Spring 2023: Mix: Meisei Story ~Our Second Summer, Beyond the Sky~
  • Fall 2022: My Hero Academia S6
  • Spring 2022: Love All Play
  • Fall 2021: Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon - The Second Act
  • Spring 2021: My Hero Academia S5
  • Fall 2020: Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon
  • Spring 2020: Hakushon Daimaō 2020
  • Fall 2019: My Hero Academia S4
  • Spring 2019: Mix: Meisei Story
  • Fall 2018: Ace Attorney S2
  • Spring 2018: My Hero Academia S3
  • Fall 2017: Time Bokan: The Villains Strike Back
  • Spring 2017: My Hero Academia S2
  • Fall 2016: Time Bokan 24
  • Spring 2016: Ace Attorney
  • Fall 2015: The File of Young Kindaichi Returns S2
  • Spring 2015: Ultimate Otaku Teacher
  • Fall 2014: Magic Kaito 1412
  • Spring 2014: The File of Young Kindaichi Returns

Even shows like Love All Play and Hakushon Daimaō 2020 frequently charted, despite having little or no presence internationally. The worst-performing show might've been Ultimate Otaku Teacher, and even that made the charts a few times.

Daigo, a monthly manga, is in the middle of Vol 9 so a new season might just be doable for late 2024 but the production committee can always go backward. It would be a waste of money not to. 20 volumes would make for an easy 52-ep all-year run. The show's animation is really bad btw. Extremy off model starting with ep 3.
