That seems to always happen when they follow up a TV series with a bunch of mini-movies rather than a conventional TV season. Same thing happened with Girls Und Panzer, which I think is still dribbling out new movies? Instead of just getting a second season on your streaming service of choice, these movies get held back from western release, maybe one or more of them gets a one-night theatrical showing in a handful of towns, maybe they get a physical release, maybe they get on HIDIVE or Crunchyroll eventually. But by that point, it's been like three years and everyone has moved on to franchises that aren't a pain in the ass to keep up with. |

I love Flying Phantom Ship so very much. I was ecstatic when Discotek picked up the license and preordered my copy ASAP.

Flying Phantom Ship is a fun time. Not only that, the US release is memorable in that it has an English dub! Somehow, Toei actually preserved the M&E track for Phantom Ship, which allowed Discotek to be able to dub it. I mean, how can you go wrong with Mona Marshall and Patrick Seitz being in the cast? Oh, and watch the bloopers on the blu-ray, too. They're pretty funny.

I watched Princess Principal a few years after it aired, and found it a very pleasant surprise. A fun and exciting spy thriller with a memorable cast, nice animation, and just the right amount of drama.
I've long been meaning to watch older anime films (non-Ghibli 80s fare for sure, but moreso whatever pre-Ghibli notable 70s and 60s entries I can feasibly access). I'll have to look into Flying Phantom Ship. |

Princess Principal totally slaps. And yes, my brain has also been randomly belting out "GET ACROSS THE WALLLLLL" for years now.
 I agree that having to wait so long for the movies to trickle out is lame, but at least we're still getting more. Shout-out to Sentai for the spectacular dub job; I'm not sure if they're particularly authentic accents, but they sound fantastic anyway. Shirobako is on my large pile of shame too.

According to his Sakuga@wiki page, Miyazaki animated the “battle between tanks and golems”. Who did the sequence referred to is conceivably on there on the animator’s page, but it will take a lot of reading to find as there isn’t a page for the film. Always appreciate the Toei Dōga classics getting some recognition. Or, TBH, anything from earlier than the ʼ90s that’s not AKIRA, Dragon Ball or Ghibli; I don’t have that high standards, but they’ve been considerably exceeded tonight. |
