I'd be curious to watch more if that ever happens. My theory is that Ivy being starless is because of that bell/voice she hears. The voice will mention something from our world, and Ivy frequently comments along the line of "what is that?" I suspect that Ivy has two souls inhabiting one body, hers and the voice, and that test either couldn't make sense of that, or detected the voice, which had no power being an outsider.

I would usually recommend LNs over their anime adaptation especially for slow burner with many skipped scenes like this one but in this very case it'd say the anime was just as good if not better sometimes than its original thanks to the transition from one scene to another which felt more natural and well-paced ( Weakest Tamer volumes are much longer than avarage ) , the colorful texture which suited perfectly and the VA trying to sound like a little boy something which was easy to forget in the LN. For those wondering it ends around 5-10% of the 3rd volume.

This one I started but eventually had to let go because of viewing schedule overload. (It didn't help that it came out on the same day as three other decent-to-excellent fantasy series.) This is not the first strong-positive take I've seen on it, so it's in my "finish if I have free time" folder.

I heartily enjoyed this title for its surprisingly strong and unusually realistic approach to world-building, at least in the first half. But boy does that title do this series no favors. ^^; I definitely thought this was another run-of-the-mill power fantasy and was only swayed by the unusually strong ep 1 reviews in the Preview guide.
My hope is that this does well enough for a second season, but if not, the manga looks like a similarly good time! |

I was surprised this one didn't get picked for weekly reviews, given the sky-high production values. If I recall, I think it had a fairly late premiere, which sometimes seems to go against shows when it comes to the weekly review votes.
That aside, the review more or less matches how I felt about the show. The first half is great, the second half is more hit-and-miss. |

One relatively minor thing I liked about the series is that its economics made sense. Ivy has to to trap and sell small animals for their meat to make just enough money that she can eat and sleep somewhere with maybe a little bit left over to save up for her journey. Even when she helps the guild catch bandits the rewards are still relatively small, in contrast to the millions of gold coins tossed around by some similiar series. It feels like a medieval economy.

I did enjoy this, even though the setup made me spend the first half wondering if it was going to turn in to "how can we torture and betray a small child this week?", in the end basically every one outside of the village turned out to be nice.
Which I think plays in to the last chunk being a bit...well fine at best, once it became clear that nothing bad was actually going to happen to her it seemed to feel the need to up the scale and it all got a bit silly. |

This ended up on the weaker side of things I watched this season, though it was a generally pleasant if slightly bland time until they twice had bizarrely upbeat scenes of people explaining that the criminals that were after Ivy are going to be sentenced to brutal slavery. I personally find that really uncomfortable considering some real life stuff, even if it is an ironic fate with the second group. Not sure if it was handled differently in the LNs, or if it deals with the subject in a more nuanced way later, but for now I really don't know if I could recommend this so easily.
On technical merits, I also thought the animation, if sometimes very ambitious, was extremely uneven and generally a little stiff. Kinda gave me the impression that the staff at Studio Massket are a fairly young and talented team that just doesn't have the experience and resources needed for a full production yet, kinda like Pine Jam circa Gamers! and Just Because. Hopefully they end up in a better spot eventually like Pine Jam, too, though! |

While the second half was a bit weak I still liked the characters and I enjoyed the whole package. That lovely ending theme brought me to tears sometimes especially after the events of episode 3. Really captures the loneliness of Ivy’s journey while still being hopeful.

I liked it, but found it interesting that the anime didn't focus more on her past. I liked the ending and thought it was a wrap around to the first meeting of Ivy and Sora, but I was wrong. The ending theme is just as emotive as the Somali OP.

In tone and somewhat art style, this is reminiscent of Uninhabited Planet Survive, which has been my favorite kids' science fiction anime for a long time. I'll put this right alongside it. In many ways this is higher in quality (and it's much shorter and less stretched).
It's a shame that it came out during a season of blockbusters and a huge number of releases. If you read this and like quality light anime for kids, please take the time to watch it. It's topnotch. |
