Nominations have typically been open for members of the industry to submit....

There's not a lot of "members of the industry" left! Laughing

Yes, the risk of collusion between the nominators for this year's awards were too great and it was feared it would ruin the integrity of the con

I'm confused why it would take over a year to retool the awards program. It's not exactly rocket science. The logistics of it is quite trivial.

Logistics yes.
Politics, no.

They probably cancelled it because of some of the possible reasons (if not all):

-It fell through the cracks since in the past public voting was allowed way before
-They don't have the money to pay for all the awards and shipping (even though they are "nickel and diming" attendees for everything under the sun)
-They pissed off too many industry people that they don't want to participate in the awards ceremony
-The people running the event and the activities are idiots (i.e. loss of the AniMaid Cafe, Arcade, Masquerade Ball, SPJA Industry Awards, etc. I even hear that they have lost ACO3 Presents Whose Line is It? Anime! and other programs are dropping out too)
-No convention gripe session (I hope that the Board of Directors are ready for an angry mob at their open meeting during the convention)

That dude on AX Live says that there are tons of epic things that are happening at AX this year...yeah...epic lines, epic angry attendees, epic angry industry members, epic lack of usual programs, epic prices for main events (that used to be free), epic prices for shuttle usage, epic headaches ... EPIC FAILURE!

p.s. In that dude's own words on his Facebook...yeah...Haters are going to hate, but bawlers are going to bawl! It appears more like AX Management will be bawling after this year.

Looks like I'm NOT missing much by staying away from the Big Cons!

I can remember back when Anime Expo had less 10,000 attendees. That was mid-1990s. I attended in 1994 and 1995. After 1995, I swore NEVER again! I've been to other cons in the Midwest (Chicago and Columbus) but nothing compares to AE for sure.

What is it up to now -- at 40,000 or 50,000 people? Probably more than that!

I can't understand how you can have that many people attending a con like that but so few people actually buy anime on DVD in a regular month! The average DVD sale/first print is less than 25,000 now!

Weird... very strange. All kinds of disposable income for cosplays and everything you can think of from Japan but few people are actually buying the animation now!

Could this be the beginning of the end for the Anime Expo? The start of a downward spiral? What has become of a once beloved Con. Anime dazed (I'm only jokingly being dramatic... but I do really wonder what will become of the expo in years to come?)

Turning corporate? Where have you been? Anime Expo has ALWAYS been an Industry-oriented convention. I went in 2005, because I was meeting a bunch of online friends.

And that is basically the only reason people go to AX and "enjoy" it -- you go to meet up with friends and hang out on the grounds. It barely has anything to do with the stuff actually going on in the convention, since it's not fan-oriented. Their industry-shmoozing pulls in a couple huge guests sure -- assuming you like standing in line for 2-3hrs for a ticket to later stand in line again for another 3hrs for the event.

The fan-panels are basically non-existent. The artist alley was pitifully small in comparison to Otakon, or even mid-sized cons like Anime Central. Etc.

Basically if you want a large con that is still fan-oriented you go with Otakon, or I guess now Anime Central is ranked #4 or #3, so I guess they aren't so mid-sized anymore. I've been to both of them, and like them both a lot. Even Otakon isn't anywhere near the sort of "line con" that AX is.

Anime Expo has always been and always will be fan-oriented. I'm quite sure that the reasons for this year's cancellation of the SPJA awards are not political or malicious. To be honest, if they were planning to cancel the awards this year, why would they announce this last second? I'm sure it just needs to be re-tooled and be back better than ever.

Oh, and FactSheet, thanks for showing all of us how superficial and mis-informed you have always been. AX is stronger than ever and all who doubt will be proven wrong once July 1st rolls around. Smile

Hay man dont knock acen I loved the size of the artists ally its huge, and the lines well they moved decent fast except for th vic mignoga signing, I am a bit mad that I could not participate in the masqurade though but at least its first come first serve and you dont have to stand in line for tickets to be able to attend events, though some of the people there were kind of thugish and it is soo spread out and hard to get anywhere as well as the convention center closing so early.

It should get 20000 people next year almost there this year with 19000, and Shishinki of japan x showing the documentry first time at acen about the rise and fall of japan x, and then doing a live press conferance during the masqurade that was epic awesome.

You need to work on your listening comprehension. And other stuff... I never said Acen was bad, I said Acen was good. I was knocking AX. Also -- attendance was 19,500 ... basically 20k, It's Yoshiki and X Japan...
