Man, as bad as some of the scenes look during this arc, they're freaking Bone's level compared to how the current arc looks animation wise.

Did Toei's animation department forget how to do proper animation as the series went along?

It's a time thing. They're just so close to the manga they have to drag everything out and shit gets lazy.

I think One Piece would benefit from a Fairy Tail style 1 yeah break

Probably, but I doubt that'll ever happen. One Piece is incredibly popular in Japan so they want to keep making episodes as fast as possible. Still, aside from a couple of episodes in part 2, they animation's never been so bad that it was a serious detriment.

Oh yeah i get it, people overreact on the One Piece subreddit all the damn time, every frame can't be prefect folks.

I understand wanting to see a good product and I understand the business have budgets too.

Things are never as easy as, "Well just make it look better."

I don't want it to look perfect...

...I want it to look good. And as of late, it just hasn't.

some of the background music sounds like it belongs in Ranma ½ rather than One Piece.

There MAY have been some background music carried over from one of the One Piece movies, but other then that, One Piece has and still does use the same background music they've been using since 1999.

It is not difficult at all to find stuff to talk about. Just talk about the episode and where they are in the story. They used to do commentaries for the big episodes like the character backstories, big showdowns, etc. The story is always progressing, new things are always happening, new characters are always showing up, and they don't have the same characters on every commentary anyway, so things happen between appearances that they could talk about. Honestly it has become insulting how the commentaries lately just have nothing to do with the show. This one was pretty bad, but Season 6 part 4 they just quit caring. I'd rather they didn't have commentaries anymore. It makes me feel embarrassed for even wanting to listen to them when apparently it's just a big joke for them.

there's only so much they can talk about related to the show. personally i like the stories and antics they get into, it's always a pleasure to hear my favorite actors goofing off and having fun.

and in terms of relevance, the crew is on a zombie island, so personal ghost stories are somewhat relevant

there's no way in hell they would take a year break like what they did with fairy tail. if that was the plan , instead they would do like naruto and end this series with the paramount war arc , and start a brand new one piece series for the fish man island arc.

I definitely wouldnt go that far. edwards scissorshands? maybe. though something like the dub version of ghost stories? probably.

a majority of Tim Burton's satires? Definitely. but its absolutely not ranma 1/2 at the slightest.

The anime has proved a huge cash cow for Toei but with Oda stretching out the current Dressrosa arc as far as possible, there is more and more that they have to put into the anime episode while trying not to catch up to the manga series. Considering also that Oda talks a mandatory break from the series every once in a while, I don't think it would hurt to maybe have them do a special episode that has nothing to do with the main story every once in a while like a few years ago. I am pretty sure once Dressrosa finishes that they will insert a filler arc in there too.

They're ability to do filler relies on Oda not screwing them again. With Dressrosa he wrote it so the Strawhats HAD to arrive the following morning after Punk Hazard, while Doffy and the citizens were confused by the newspaper, so the filler was relegated to a two episode thing that took place in one night, now with the crew split up now it may become difficult to insert a properly timed filler.

This is the arc where they really started to ruin the anime with the horrible 1 chapter per episode pacing

They've had plenty of chances to do filler over the years, they won't because apparently the japanese have very low standards these days and will watch anything with one piece slapped on it.

I would honestly rather the anime go on breaks to let the manga get farther ahead over butchering the manga.

Now I need to look for that.

They're about a year behind. Do they need to space themselves out even more than that?

I, for one, would love to see more Straw Hat Theatre. They are what-if scenarios or complete and total randomness, so they wouldn't step on the series's tightly-woven continuity. I think the continuity is the main reason Toei doesn't want to do filler arcs, as by now, I'm sure they've realized potentially anything could become important later in a way that could contradict a filler story (most notably Zoro cutting steel before he should've been able to and Chopper breaking his Rumble Balls' rules before they were established), so a non sequitur like Star Hat Theatre, which is always some alternate universe, would be perfect.
