I'm definitely going to have to visit this one again. I just got my shipping confirmation for the final volume. Now I'll have the whole expensive set sitting on my shelves.

Hey, that's exactly how I felt about the show. The amount of creativity and passion these guys put into their work is really unparalleled in the anime realm, it's really something I can respect from artists these days. So of course every time I secretly hope an anime from the most recent season is the "new Kill la Kill," I'll end up being disappointed. There's just nothing else out there like it, and there likely never will be. But I suppose that can also be a good thing. Also, Satsuki is objectively the best girl in all of anime. Fact. I can't wait to finally get this volume. I've been holding off watching the other 4 so I could just marathon the entire thing. This set includes some of my favorite episodes (the show, for me, just got better and better as it went along after the sorta "meh" Osaka arc was concluded). Even better than that, I can finally stop feeling enormous guilt every time I shell out a good 60 bucks for another volume of the series! Hooray for irresponsible spending! |

I have a hard time coming up with another show that has as much crazy energy as this one. Even when it gets dramatic and emotional, it's done with such enthusiasm. I have to wonder if this show had the same hardships in its crew and such as seen in Shirobako, as the end result seems like everyone was having so much fun, or maybe they did once the project was over. Whatever the case, everyone who worked on the series should feel proud of it.
I would not recommend going around naked to look for friends for real. Trust me on that. |

I find the op wording "controversial" interesting as the anime is one of the few original shows of the last few years that hit with the mainstream but i am such a naysayer i guess as straight out dislike the the final storyline and nearly gave up on watching towards the end.
The show can´t work with a strong drama focus for me unlike Lagann (10/10) as everything is solved with a big DBZ-esqe deas ex machina with a bunch of screaming, standing in the air and a big forgive and forget massage in the end. Excuse me but half of the cast are amoral murderers who are played up as saviors, the entire planet nearly got wiped off the map but the power of love and friendship it is as Uzu opens his eyes again, Rei gets to join the nakama club too as she had is so hard in the past you guys, Senketsu is reviled to be just fine and Satsuki gets a plot important haircut to symbolize ... hm i don´t know. Even the amazing first ending gets remade for no reason. Grr. Had the anime stopped after the amazing fight with Nonon in ep 11 and ended with a two-parter and skipped all the Ragyo/Life Fibers crap then i could recommend it with barely any consideration and watch it again but not like this as i had almost no fun with the second half. I settled on a begrudging "decent" in the end as even i have to acknowledge some tech strength that stayed strong in the second half and i am fine that the show made money and was successful but i am less happy that the anime won writing awards as that aspect proved to be a joke to me. Whatever and i like every animated tale by the writer/director so i will consider this the exception and let´s see how (the unrelated) Ninja Slayer will be received in the end. I like it as of now but it may prove too long again. 13 episodes and out Trigger is my hope for the future (and you just read my future amazon review). So about the design decisions  :

How easily people forget Gurren Lagann. It even has the same 2 act structure of Kill la Kill. |

By this part of the show for me the story was blown out like a bad tire. if taken separately I guess it holds up better. I can only take so many instances of Mind Control and people changing their minds and needing to be convinced to do anything in a 2-cour show. I was exhausted by the writing at this point and not in a good way. the comedy kept it alive and gave hope. The climax worked as well.

But then the show wouldn't have had a conclusive ending. There are hints to the "true" villain as early as episode 3, so the overall theme of the show was baked into the premise from the beginning. Also, you criticize the show for resorting to multiple deus ex mahinas (which Gurren Lagann did in spades as well, never will understand why people always act like that is so much better writing-wise than KLK. it was probably the difference in pre-air date hype levels), yet you say that the fight with Nonon was "amazing." Despite the fact that that fight itself was won by Ryuko negating her sound waves with pure harmony or some BS like that. I'm perfectly fine with ridiculous situations, as long as they never break any rules that have been established by the world already. |

As much as I love Gurren Lagann (I started re-watching it today), I wish people would forget about it, at least in regards to Kill La Kill. It is its own thing, it does not need to be constantly compared. |

Been waiting a while for Kill La Kill to finish a series collection. I'm glad to hear the extras are good, but now comes the time when I wait for the sales.

^ I've already got that UK box on pre-order. Altogether, the complete series costs about half what the US release does and comes with some really nice artbooks that no one else gets.
That region free player I picked up some time ago has really paid for itself.
